My Windows 10 PC is hard wired to my Qnap TS-231 via Cat-6 cables going through a gigabit switch. Both the NAS and my PC report 1Gbps connection speed, however transferring files from a mechanical HDD to the NAS is going at somewhere between 10Mbps at best and 500kbps at worst.
Anyone know what might be causing this? I haven't changed any major Samba settings that I know of on either my PC or my NAS. Files seem to transfer MUCH quicker from my Mac to the NAS (also hard wired via gigabit connection) so I have no idea what could be causing a bottleneck....??

Yes sorry should've made it more clear, I'm transferring via Samba (I assume - whatever the NAS shows up as in Windows 10). It only seems to be when I have many smaller files (like tiny .txt files or even ~5MB JPEGs) that it goes slowly, strangely; larger files like videos seem to get up to a decent 60-80Mbps speed that I'd expect....

What SMB version have you set on your NAS?
Control Panel, Network & File Services, Win/Mac/NFS, Advanced options?

Re: Very slow (~1Mb/s) transfer speed - SMB, Win10, Cat 6 cables
I had lowest V1, highest V3. I changed lowest to V2 to see if that made any difference but it didn't; I also remember needing to use V1 a while back because one of my apps wouldn't stream videos via Samba without it, but that might have gone away now....

Re: Very slow (~1Mb/s) transfer speed - SMB, Win10, Cat 6 cables
Ok thanks I'll look into that. I will add that transfers seem slowest when transferring many small files; with large +500MB video files I get maybe 20MB/s, sometimes going as high as 60-70MB/s, but with many smaller files it can slow to even 700KB/s.

Any active scanning of transferred files by antivirus perhaps?

Re: Very slow (~1Mb/s) transfer speed - SMB, Win10, Cat 6 cables
I doubt it; I don't have any antivirus running on my Windows PC so unless QNAP is somehow scanning files...?
I think it might just be that there were a lot of small files, even though I wish that wasn't the case.

Re: Very slow (~1Mb/s) transfer speed - SMB, Win10, Cat 6 cables
I have an issue with a TS-420U, perhaps similar to your problem. When copying small files it takes forever, like 100 small (less than 30 kb each) takes 30-45 seconds to copy to shared folder. This is not normal. The funny thing is, when I set Guest Access Right to "Read Only" (instead of "Deny Access") on the shared folder, the same copy operation takes only 1-3 seconds to complete. Obviously this is not a solution because I don't wan't everybody to have access to the shared folder on the network.
Perhaps same issue for you? Can you test this?
