Go to Shared Folders, Edit Shared Folders Permissions. Then try the share, if you can get straight in it would prove if it is a permissions issue or SMB explorer share access not working at all.
Once you've tested this disable Guest access

Post screen shots of your permissions screen.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

For testing purposes I took a currently unused share folder, mp3, and made guest access full. I was then able to map a drive letter to that, and can read and write to it. All folders that have guest access denied will not map.

For comparison with mp3 screen, which allows drive mapping. "Anne" returns "Access denied"

Anne - and, on checking, I find that my NAS account is anne. Windows, of course, doesn't know the difference. All the same, I have tried several times to use the name "anne" with the password, without success.

I despair! No, it didn't solve the issue. Attempting to map to DataFromBorg now returns the following

It's lies - all lies!
You'll note that Anne has appeared in Network Locations, but it's Anne on this laptop!

Actually thats better than before as its trying to connect :)

Go back and delete any credentials you have in windows related to the nas again - and unmap any old mappings even the z: for know - then reboot to clear out etc

Then try and reconnect to the nas (you are close now) - i assume the new Anne user on the nas has permissions for the share you are trying to access?

I assume drive z is not on the nas?

As for Anne appearing on your network - you have homehub enabled? so not a problem click on it and you will get shares off the laptop - the Anne bit is your username and () name of pc

There were no saved credentials for the nas, but I rebooted anyway, just in case.

Yes, all relevant directories are 770. Unfortunately, I still get Access Denied.

Z: was the test mapping to a directory where guest had been given full access. It's now deleted.

Yes, I understood that, but was momentarily confused. Checking the Details entry though said it was a media server, so I assumed it was safe to ignore it, at least for the present.

Let try something different

create a new share on your nas

Assign Anne to it as read write - dont - assign any other user or group just Anne

Can you connect?

So now you need to setup permissions on the Shared folder to give the user access.

Not sure what you mean here. The existing shared folders are all read/write for me, but also read only for family members - admin has rw of course. Are you advising me to make changes to one of these folders? If so, what exactly?
