QNAP not appearing on secondary wi-fi access point

Post by jon96789 »

I have two QNAP NAS devices with a weird Wi-Fi issue...

My QNAP TS-453 Pro and QNAP TS-853A are connected to my primary Netgear R7000 AC1900 router (the router is configured as an access point connected to my ISP Modem/router) via ethernet. Both devices appear on the Wi-Fi network on the primary Netgear router. When i look in the Netgear web interface, it shows both QNAP devices as attached to the network.

I have another secondary Netgear R7000 AC1900 router which is connected directly to the primary Netgear router via ethernet and is also configured as an access point. The Wi-Fi network on the secondary router has a different SSID from the primary Netgear router. When I look at the secondary router web interface, it only shows the TS-453 Pro, not the TS-853A as attached devices.

I cannot figure out why the TS-853A is not appearing as an attached device on the secondary router.

Both NAS devices have static IP addresses. The ISP router has an IP address of 192.168.0.1, the primary router is 192.168.0.2, the secondary router is 192.168.0.3. The TS-453 pro is 192.168.0.8 and the TS-853A is 192.168.0.9 so they are all on the same subnet. ichecked the network settings on both NAS and they appear identical. The only difference i can see is that the TS-453 Pro is on OS 4.2.0 and the TS853A is on 4.2.2. i cannot upgrade the TS-453 Pro because the DLNA client freezes when upgraded to 4.2.2...

You might need to do this inquiry in the Asus forums instead.

Both your R7000 are configured as an access point - not as a router - confirm?

So your ISP router LAN port, both the R7000 in AP mode, are on the same layer 2 network, and the R7000 router WAN ports are not used (not sure the WAN ports are re-configured to LAN pots in AP mode), too?

And last but not least, you don't have any access issues (leaving the potential DLNA trouble you should please contact the QNAP Customer Service) to both NAS form any WiFi AP (SSID) ie. for SAMBA/Windows File Sharing, AFPO (Apple mac OS file sharing, or to access the NAS QTS desktop Web interface?

Forget the Attached Device view for your set-up: This works reliably only in roter mode, with the router handling the DHCP for the (W)LAN. The Attached Device should not be visible at all if the R7000 are in AP mode. The Netgear consumer routers make use of a somewhat strange L2/L3 mixed implementation. Some devices allow some add-on services in AP mode, ie. Parental Control (OpenDNS in fact, capturing L3 DNS traffic), and in router mode, the WiFi guest and the "normal" SSID are operating in the very same L3 subnetwork. All this dos not only cause confusion to the Netgear owners..

Both Netgear routers are being used as an access point. The WAN ports are not used, the ethernet cables are plugged into the regular LAN ports. No issues with the Wi-Fi networks.
