I'm a video editor. My files are on a 4-bay TVS-x72XT. Drives are in raid; it works great.
But! I recently switched to Windows, and instead of using a thunderbolt adapter, I am trying to get 10G speeds to transfer files.
I am on Windows 11. My ASUS motherboard has 2 ethernet adapters.
I am using a slower one for internet and...
I am attempting to connect my NAS directly from its included 10G port to Marvell FastLinQ Edge 10Gbit Network Adapter on the Asus motherboard.
I have managed to connect the nas through a switch to my FIOS router and get regular speeds (100MB/sec transfer), but I can neither connect to or transfer files via a direct networked connection.
After reading numerous set up posts, I set the ethernet port on the Marvell (the motherboard) to static ipv4 and subnet mask.
Using Qfinder, I was able to locate the NAS but can not connect to it or change settings. There are small bits of data being transmitted, but nothing substantial. I can not login or adjust settings from Qfinder, and the NAS doesn't appear in windows finder.
The cable I'm using is a standard CAT7 cable.
What would you suggest I attempt next to try to connect via 10G? Hopefully, just a setting tweak.
Thanks!
Can't connect/transfer with 10G on Win 11 (un-brick my NAS) =)

make sure NAS 10G and PC 10G ports are on the same subnet (different from your regular subnet) and then mount the shares on the PC with the 10G subnet
e.g.
NAS: 192.168.10.10 (static)
PC: 192.168.10.20 (static)
mount shares with
\\192.168.10.10\sharename
e.g.
NAS: 192.168.10.10 (static)
PC: 192.168.10.20 (static)
mount shares with
\\192.168.10.10\sharename

Hello Moodaltar -
you should state -
this is the static IP address of Ethernet port 1 on my TVS-x72XT, and this is the subnet. (State exactly what you have set it at)
then you should state -
this is the static IP address of the 10G adapter on my ASUS 10G Marvell card - this is the Static IPv4 address, and this is the Subnet Mask.
The answer is in the details.
Once you do this, we can say "try this, and try that".

Re: Can't connect/transfer with 10G on Win 11 (un-brick my NAS) =)
Thank you for getting me on the right direction.
It looks like the qfinder app didn't actually reset the IP.
But it worked from the QTS control panel.
Getting 660 Write, 1047 Read currently on Blackmagic speed test.
However, the NAS is still not mounting, just hangs up when trying to access through windows.
Perhaps someone could take a look at the below to see if any adjustments may be needed?
Below is an overview of my setup (Thanks Bob, for your formatting suggestion!):
TVS-x72XT 4-Bay NAS, raided drives running ver. 4.5.4
Fixed IP Address of Ethernet port 1 on my TVS-x72XT 169.254.9.84
Subnet Mask of Ethernet port 1 on my TVS-x72XT 255.255.0.0 (/16)
Default Gateway of Ethernet port 1 on my TVS-x72XT 169.254.9.80
I've toggled on the settings for DNS use as follows: Primary DNS server 8.8.8.8 Secondary DNS Server 8.4.8.4
--
Ethernet settings on Marvell FastLinQ Edge 10Gbit Network Adapter (Driver 3.1.3.0)
IPV4 169.254.9.80
IPV4 mask 255.255.255.0
IPV6 set to off (AUTO)
DNS Server assignment is set to: Automatic (DHCP)
This currently shows up as Unidentified network - Public Network

Ethernet 1G should be DHCP (with DHCP managed by your router/gateway) .. right now it can't find a DHCP Server
Ethernet 10G should be fixed (see my suggestion for the static IPs) .. right now it can't find a DHCP Server

Re: Can't connect/transfer with 10G on Win 11 (un-brick my NAS) =)
Excellent, thank you. I've resolved it. Can transfer 4 large video files simultaneously at a combined rate of ~788 MB/s on average.
Feels nice to see this work as advertised!
Router IP 192.168.1.1
Computer Motherboard 10GB Ethernet port IP is 192.168.1.10
NAS IP 192.168.1.20
Will note for future to change the NAS settings before the windows settings or risk disconnection =]
Oh a final dumb question: If I grabbed another network card and opted to use the network bridging features and connect the NAS via thunderbolt... would that theoretically be faster, or is this device limited to the speed of the gigabit connection?

If you are using google DNS servers, the secondary is 8.8.4.4

Re: Can't connect/transfer with 10G on Win 11 (un-brick my NAS) =)
You kept the 10G ports in the same IP range as the rest of your network (192.168.1.x), switch it to a different subnet (e.g. 192.168.10.x)
The second question I don't understand, you can get a second network card, but what does that have to do with thunderbolt ?

Re: Can't connect/transfer with 10G on Win 11 (un-brick my NAS) =)
Thank you, it turns out I'm simply not an expert on this but know it's all quite close to working. I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to respond.
Maybe this is what I'm doing wrong:
Does the NAS have to be connected to the internet?
I can just get 1 cable to go from the computer to the NAS and achieve 10G connectivity?
Below is a detailed description what the hardware and settings I currently am trying to use:
Computer:
Z690 Creator Wifi Motherboard
it has one on-board 10GB port
it also has one on-board 2.5G port
NAS: TVS-x72XT
has one 10GB port, which is cabled directly to the 10GB port on the computer
has 2 2.5GB ports, unused
Cable:
One cat7 cable tested and working.
Software:
Qfinder Pro and web interface
Router: (x's represent numbers)
ROUTER IPv4 address is from: DHCP
ROUTER IPv4 address 100.33.xxx.xxx
ROUTER Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
ROUTER IPv4 Default Gateway 100.33.xxx.1
ROUTER IPv4 DNS Address 1
ROUTER 68.xxx.xxx.12
ROUTER IPv4 DNS Address 2
ROUTER 71.xxx.x.12
(the router also has 3 wifi connections)
------
I'd just like to be able to connect to the NAS, and transfer files when editing video!
Assuming I want to start from the beginning and get this to work, should I begin by adjusting the IP DNS address on the computer's 10G connection?
And then, allow the NAS to autoassign the other settings?
Finally, the 10G port default IP assigned is 169.254.x.x
When I tell the nas to create an IP automatically, it sets it up with an IP in the same range (169.254.x.xx)

Re: Can't connect/transfer with 10G on Win 11 (un-brick my NAS) =)
Set the 10G interface to a fixed IP at both ends, example:
NAS: 192.168.10.1/255.255.255.0
PC: 192.168.10.2/255.255.255.0
The other interface (2.5G) at PC to DHCP for getting an IP from your router.
No need to mask internal IPs, it only makes troubleshooting more complicate.
Regards
Edit: There is no need for NAS to access into internet for a proper function. All updates can be done offline. Just download newer firmware/apps to PC and then update the NAS if needed.
