Working on a VM

Post by yellowapple »

Hello again,
Is it possible to work on a daily base on a VM through HDstation?
The target is a big box, 677 with at least 32GB ram and a GPU.
Thank.

Yes - although I would suggest if you are doing heavy disk usage in the VM, to put the files on SSD drives (either m.2 or 2.5").

And I would probably recommend a wireless keyboard w/trackpad or mouse (Logitech works well).

Hello Paul,

Thank you for the info, I'll probably install also two SSD 500GB.

I'm using for a long time 4K KVM over IP with USB/IR/audio passthrough, all sources are located in a rack in the basement with transmitters. The clients, displays, TV and a beamer are connected to the POE receivers. Advantages, no noise at all, limited low frequencies EMF emissions, no snaking cables in the office or living room and finally, this is highly flexible, you can choose the source and display it on whatever screen. This is why the big Qnap will be the perfect solution for me .... The only shadow, no GPU through vQTS.

Also if you are planning to leverage vQTS, be thoughtful about which CPU you choose if you need more than 1-2 vQTS as the Ryzen 1600 & 1700 have different limits in the # of vQTS VM's supported.
