Kernel Panic when trying to install CentOs

Post by telemach »

QNAP TS-253 Pro
QNAP version 4.5.4.1800
Virtualization station version 3.5.68 (2021-11-09)

I'm trying to install CentOS 7.4 from this image.
CentOS 7.4 is supported according to QNAP

The installation results in kernel panic:

Code: Select all

[8.272853] Failed to execute / init
[8.273793] Kernel panic — not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. See Linux Documentation/ init.txt for guidance.

My source image is in /share/Downloads, target in /share/VMs/ycast/ycast.img

I tried a variety of settings for the VM as well as other images (Ubuntu, Xubuntu, other versions of CentOS, etc...), all fail with a similar error.
I already have a few CentOS (7 and 8 ) and one Ubuntu (18.04) VM running successfully, so it's not a problem with running a VM per se, only installing it.
Could somebody please point me into the right direction?
Please let me know if any additional info needed.

I found the answer over here by chance - the VM needs to have 4GB of memory assigned for installation, this can be reduced later.
