moving one VM to another QNAP

Post by jamescodefour »

Hi, as part of our disaster recovery plan we have a 2nd QNAP which receives a daily backup of the VM.img file from our primary QNAP. (via RTRR).

Presume that in the event of a primary NAS failure I could start the Virtualisation Station on the backup QNAP, create a new VM and point the HDD image to the latest backup? setting the IP's to that of the failed NAS?

While the IMG file contains the "disk image" of the VM, it doesn't contain the VM 'definition'.

So you would want to do an initial VM Backup from the primary QNAP, and then restore that backup on your secondary QNAP. Then you probably could do an RTRR of the .img file to keep the data piece in sync.

Any changes to a VM, or new VM would drive another backup/restore.
