Reverse DNS

Post by nstiasni »

I have TS-431XeU, Firmware 4.3.4.0435.
I am using this NAS as a domain controller. While normal DNS (A) is working fine, I am unable to make reverse DNS function properly:

myserver [/var/log/sssd] # host myserver.xxx.yy
myserver.xxx.yy has address 192.168.0.6

myserver [/var/log/sssd] # host 192.168.0.6
6.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa has no PTR record

In DNS settings it is configured as:

PTR server
A 192.168.0.6

Why is this feature not working?

Thank you.

Best regards,
Nik

Re: Reverse DNS

I installed RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools) for my Windows 10 desktop (https://www.microsoft.com/en-sg/downloa ... x?id=45520, install WindowsTH-RSAT_WS2016-x64.msu as WindowsTH-RSAT_WS_1709-x64.msu has a bug that will not install DNS manager).

Using dnsmgmt.msc (DNS Manager) I added new Reverse Lookup zone and subsequently host PTR entry.

It works now:
server [~] # host 192.168.0.6
6.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer server.xxx.yy.

EDIT: (It is currently not possible to configure reverse DNS entries via QNAP DNS). <-- scratch that.
It seems it might be possible to add Reverse Lookup zone in QNAP using the following steps:

DNS Settings-->Add Domain-->Name = 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa if 192.168.0.0/24 is your network, subsequently add PTR records and in a name field enter number between 1-254 for the corresponding host. The value is FQDN.

Best regards,
Nik
