Cheaper than buying a separate server!

So does the anniversary update (1607) fix authentication issue?
If so, why would Qnap not know that?

While I haven't used a QNAP as a principal domain controller (PDC) using SAMBA 4, I have used the unsupported facilities in SAMBA 3.6.25 to run a TS-459 Pro II as a PDC for many years. I have seen situations where you could not join the domain even when you could ping the NAS and sometimes even when you can see the shares. It seems to be a problem with name resolution, specifically WINS (see http://www.oreilly.com/openbook/samba/book/ch07_03.html for more details on name resolution. Basically WINS seems to get it's local database messed up and the easiest solution was to force it to re-build. I don't know if WINS is even still used in a SAMBA 4 based machine, but if it is (check /etc/config/smb.conf), then the same solution may work. That is;
  1. ssh into your nas.
  2. shutdown SAMBA: /etc/init.d/smb.sh stop
  3. delete or rename the file wins.dat which on my system has been at /share/MD0_DATA/.samba/state/wins.dat or /share/MD0_DATA/.locks/wins.dat depending on the QNAP firmware version. You may need to search for it, i.e. find / -name wins.dat
  4. restart SAMBA: /etc/init.d/smb.sh start
  5. probably also re-boot the offending PC
The file wins.dat gets re-built automatically when SAMBA starts.
