Setup QNAP as Domain controller keeps failing - log files?

Post by briggsb » Tue Jun 23, 2020 9:37 pm

Hi,
So I've added the QNAP to the domain, no problems at all. But it will not let me add it as a DC. Read only DC is the most appropriate as it's at a remote office with no real network kit, just a VPN router linking back to Head office. Connectivity is good, as it did join the domain fine. But getting it setup as a DC keeps failing. Updated FW to latest version and rebooted, still no difference.
Any idea where to start with looking into this, log files, diagnostics that can be done? The error is nondescript, simply... [Domain Controller] Failed to add a read-only domain controller to domain "YOURDOMAIN.MSFT"
Any tips much appreciated.

Do you want to add your QNAP as "additional domain controller"? The primary Domain Controller is configured with Windows 2008 Server functionality?

Ideally a RODC, but neither that or additional works. Forest functional level has to be 2008 then for it to work?
