Performance on video playback using Video Station

Post by masternemesis »

Hi all
I just bought a QNAP TS-253D 4GB and I use two Seagate IronWolf 6TB SATA III 3.5" HDD 5400rpm with it. QNAP is connected using Eth to a switch and the switch to the router. All 1Gbs connections. Pretty standard.

My question is around CPU performance. When I play a 1080p .mp4 H.264 movie within my LAN from my browser using Video Station app and playing the original file (not transcoding to lower res) my CPU usage is between 25% and 35% throughout the whole playback and the main responsible process for that is ffmpeg. When playing the same video files using Plex Media Server then CPU usage is between 3-5% even when performing transcoding.

Do you also get same behaviour is it something wrong with my setup/video files etc? Why Video Station is handling video playbacks so badly compared to Plex Media Server?

Thanks in advance

Nikos
