Photography collection organization

Post by Rodelero »

Hello everyone.

I am a bit struggling with PhotoStation 6 on my NAS.

I have a following scenario:

I store primarily pictures but also some videos on NAS with following structure:
1) I have a folder "Photography" which serves as root folder for all pictures
2) There I have folders representing years
3) Each year has subfolders with various events
4) Some event subfolders sometimes may have additional subfolders

Pictures/videos are in format like 2022.08.05_15-06-40.jpg

I would like to:
1) have this hierarchy represented by the album structure
2) Pictures there sorted primarily by name (creation date stored in exif could also be useful)
3) See the same organization in Android application
4) Be able to load and play pictures/videos from NAS
5) Have an ability to upload pictures/videos to any (sub)folder

Could I ask you whether I do have realistic expectations and which way is the best one to achieve that?

I tried using Piwigo. It is not bad, but Videos were rather clumsy (I had to use 3rd party plugin) and it is broken for me ATM.
I also tried Nextcloud, but that feels like an overkill and Android apps are not mature either (I loved Les Pass app, but it doesn't handle subfolders at all).

I decided to give a PhotoStation a try, but It feels rather clumsy and I was not able to figure out subfolders etc.
I also played with QuMagie. It's AI looks pretty impressive (not perfect and sometimes even hilarious, but still, i like it) but there I couldn't figure out the subfolders, too.

Could you please advise?
Thank you very much.

Just make sure you never ever expose this online .. I personally know an amateur photographer that thought he could use PhotoStation for viewing photos when not at home (never asked me if that was a good idea) .. cost him 0.05BTC in ransom (no backups of course)

Naturally, I intend to burn them on Blu Ray and the NAS is on my local network only.

Well for many it's not 'naturally' as QNAP did (and still does) advertise these units as 'personal cloud' .. so if this is local only, good

No. Do they handle Videos well? How about upload of pictures into albums? Is it easy for them?

I can handle more complicated procedure, but my wife won't be too happy of that.

I used to use Zenphoto many years ago and this can use the source of images etcas /multimedia/photos folder layout so you only need to upload to that. zenphoto then creates thumbnails for cache purposes.

lychee does let you use that type of source but uploading of photos is easy enough, I found Lychee very responsive as a album/gallery application.

Of course the container is an excellent solution but there are some things to install first like Apache or something else that I don't understand/know... that's why I asked for a complete guide... do you have one?

sorry there is no simple guide.

install container station, install lychee docker. once installed goto <nas-ip:32768> end of.

you spent more time waiting for an answer than doing it yourself.
