I have a TS-253A for over 1 year and I am not happy how it is configured.
The main use is accessing the fileserver with Linux desktops over NFS and iOS devices over SMB. duh!
Both Linux as iOS offer good applications to access a fileserver. Though I tried the TS-253A to use as a mediaserver like I did with my old WD TV Live. Unfortunately the NAS is packed with too many programs that are just not it, and unfortunately they slow down all other processes.
So what I want is to downgrade the nas into a pure fileserver and use a standalone descent dedicated mediaplayer for entertainment.
But where to start? Just uninstall everything? Is there a firmware lite?
How to remove all multimedia functionality?

Re: How to remove all multimedia functionality?
a slightly more helpful list than OneCD
uninstall all the media apps from your qnap
turn off all the media options in control panel and filemanager (check gear icon and uncheck thumb nail generation etc)
I have no apps other than Netdata running on my 853A so its a close as i can get it to a "file server"
