[HS-251] How should I play movies in 2019 ?

Dear Qnapers,

I am the very happy of the multimedia HS-251 (yup, not HS-251+!) and keep advertising it to everyone.
I keep it up to date as much as possible with the latest firmware version and fine-tuned the services that I (don't) want to run.

However, I have a hard time playing movie...which is sad because this is the main usage of the box at home: TV multimedia player.
As I am limited to 2Go, I kind drop PLEX quickly, I lost the default shipped KODI (16?) from the QTS app-store...
I found here and there different KODI version (17....) links, but the one I have currently simply crashes when trying to open half of my movies (probably de biggest files, with higher resolution, formats,..)
I do suspect a codecs issue and I'd love to have the latest version of (my)KODI running on it as this is a great SW.

Now, what is the 'way to go' in 2019? I mean I play the game of QTS/firmware updates, I would like to simply use that device as it is meant to run...so what is the best practice here?
(the QTS default video station is not a good answer as it does play most of the movies...but without any sound ... )
I am not really in favor of downgrading QTS firmware, but I can welcome the idea of any underground *.qpk link with an optimized KODI (or other SW) image that could eventually read *all* my movies seamlessly

Thank you for your inputs/comments/links !

invest ~40 bucks in an android playerbox and be done with it (with QNAP as a player .. not with the whole system)

those android boxes can play 4k via KODI with no issues .. easy peasy no headache .. the QNAP will act as the playout server via SMB or DLNA

Just an example

Well this is probably indeed the most efficient answer...but also the most disappointing... :/
I was jumping on this Qnap device 4 years ago in order to merge everything into one single device.

Now I understand, simply because I follow the Qnap firmware/update policy, I get locked-out of a good default media player ... ?
Or is that the codec world is evolving so fast ? :s

Anyway, your answer would/will be considered ....but I wish there would still be hope for having my qnap as the media player too... :s

install kodi from qnapclub if you want to continue using your qnap ... but there is no official support and it could break wirh any firmware or hdstation update

the official qnap players have issues with audio codecs (they removed codecs due to licensing issues a couple of years ago)
