HowTo access remote QNAP?

We have setup two QNAP devices. One is in the office and use it for backups. Let's call this system LOCAL.
We setup a second QNAP device (currently in my house). Let's call this system REMOTE.
We use rsync initiated from REMOTE to transfer new/changed files from LOCAL to REMOTE.
I know I can open ports on my home router to access REMOTE; but the plan is to move REMOTE to another location where changing router settings to make this happen will be very problematic.
Is there software that can be used to allow LOCAL to communicate with REMOTE to monitor and maintain the system?
Somehow LOCAL must know the external IP address of REMOTE and then somehow communicate through the router.
How can this be accomplished?

Reply to my own question. Would enable VPN Server on LOCAL and VPN Client on REMOTE address this situation?

if you establish a tunnel between both NAS..sure that should work
