Remote Replication: [sender] io timeout after 601 seconds

Postby comas17 » Sun Sep 22, 2013 4:21 pm

Hi all
we have 3 QNAP NAS (TS469U, TS459U and TS419P+). All have the same firmware, release 3.8.3

TS 469 and TS459 are located in our office; TS 419P+ is located in a remote site, connected only to Internet, not connected to the office using a VPN

We have configured some NAS-TO-NAS backup jobs:
4 jobs from TS469->TS459 (using the internal network of our office)
4 jobs from TS469->TS419P+ (using a standard ADSL connection)

Everything has worked correctly for a couple of years; since about 2 weeks all jobs to the remote NAS fail with the same message "[Remote Replication] DATI_Remoto failed: [sender] io timeout after 601 seconds -- exiting"

Connection is OK (we're using dyndns, we opened the port 873, etc), the job starts, files are uploaded but after 20/30 minutes it fails; it starts again and after 20/30 minutes it fails. After the third retry it stops

I've searched on the web and I've found also this thread ( viewtopic.php?f=22&t=23640 ) but it is quite old and related to quite old firmware release
It seems to be a "rsync" problem but there are a couple of things I don't understand and I don't know what to analyze or change

- backup jobs to the local NAS (using internal network) are OK, and I'm transferring also quite big files (virtual machine disks)
- backup jobs to the remote NAS (using ADSL connection) worked for a long time without any problem... what is happening now ? we are transferring about the same amount of data/files

The only "strange" thing (but I don't know if it is related to the problem) is that we had in the last weeks problems with the ADSL connection in the remote site and we changed the modem/router/firewall but now all is working and, as I said, connection is OK

We tried to restart the remote NAS but with no success; we did not tried to restart the local NAS (the source) yes as we have lots of connections, virtual machines, etc and we need to plan and to schedule it.. can it be the solution ?

Any other idea ?
Thank you

Corrado

Additional information
I've seen that each error appears every 40 minutes...
I mean, the process starts, it uploads correctly for 40 minutes and then it stops... it starts again, it uploads for 40 minutes and stops again... for three times...
This is my events log

2013-09-26 00:13:51 [Remote Replication] DATI_Remoto failed: [sender] io timeout after 601 seconds -- exiting.

2013-09-25 21:51:13 [Remote Replication] DB_Remoto failed: [sender] io timeout after 600 seconds -- exiting. Begin 2nd retry.
2013-09-25 21:10:05 [Remote Replication] DB_Remoto failed: [sender] io timeout after 600 seconds -- exiting. Begin 1st retry.
2013-09-25 20:30:03 [Remote Replication] DB_Remoto started.

Is it a "rsync/NAS" problem or a ADSL connection problem ?

Thank you

Corrado

Got the exact same problem with TS-459 Pro+ (4.1.0) rsync push to remote NAS TS-209 (3.3.2)

Rsync appears to work fine for subdirectories and small files. But trying to rsync push larger files is where it hangs. Even files so small as 1.5MB does it hang. Any updates on this??

Check that you aren't breaking the Windows rule for filename\path length. I had a similar issue where my Windows server would backup to the QNAP, but during replication to the offsite QNAP it would report the same error. Turned out some of my users had crazy long file names and folder names on the network share, breaking the character length limitation. After I adjusted the names to comply with the limit, all was well

It doesn't appear to be the windows rule for filename/path length. I the file: /share/sql_backup/test.bak rsyncing to /share/sql_backup_nz/ and it drops at 1.5MB. I found that the server pushing is version 3.0.7 and the remote NAS receiving is v3.0.6 which I think may be the issue. More on this, I'm then having trouble updating rsync from the remote NAS. Since it's a TS-209 the most up to date QTS firmware is 3.3.2 (build 0918) whereas my TS-459 is sitting on 3.8.4 (build 0816). Considering I can't update the firmware any more on the TS-209 I tried to manually update rsync by itself to at least 3.0.7 to match the TS-459. yum update rsync and rpm -Uvh rsync don't work either after downloading the 3.0.7 package. So I tried to download IPKG on the remote server through the web gui and that fails to install as well. Any ideas on how to update rsync to 3.0.7 on QTS 3.3.2?

I have the same problem too.
QNAP didn't solve this even now?

[Remote Replication] (Sync) backup from 222 to 202 failed: [sender] io timeout after 601 seconds -- exiting Begin 2nd retry.
