Backups are mandatory on a regular schedule. A regular schedule is not in terms of months or even years .
And trying to deal with NAS disks in a PC is always a risk.
To minimize the risk you can clone the disks and work with the clone.
If something happens to disks while "playing" around, you can revert to the origin disks.
Not handsome for NAS (IMHO) with more than 4 disks.
