HOW TO MAKE A FULL NAS BACK UP TO AWS?

Post by HDX-NAS »

Hi All. .

I am looking into making a cloud back up of one of our NAS systems. .
I have the following questions;

1- Which is the best provider ? . . Amazon S3, Azure, Backblaze etc . . ?
2- Is it safe to do this?
3- Is it possible to make a full clone of one of our NAS'S to the cloud that can be used to restore an entire NAS system from ?
4-Would that clone be accessible from a Mac, for example to mount via SMC in order to access data ?

Advice would be greatly appreciated. . .
JJ

1. Is an individual flavour, no objective answer possible.
2. If you encrypt your data before uploading to cloud using a common encryption cipher it seems safe.
3. No, QNAP does not provide a "bare-metal" backup/restore since years. Common apps backup user data, but not system data from NAS.
4. Not familiar with Mac, but my guess: depends to type of backup and encryption.

Ok.
Thanks FSC830.
So only data can be backed up.

You can backup NAS settings to, but this does usually not contain all apps.
This will help you to setup NAS again after a failure and a new initialization (which is mandatoray first).
After restoring NAS settings the NAS name, IP, raid level, etc. is identical to the pre-error status, but data needs still to be restored in a separate task.
Also most likely not all apps and apps settings are restored, this depends to individual app.

I see.
Well, tbh, it’s the data that’s critical.
Thank you.
