Just a small rundown on how to set it up, primarily because I forgot how to make it work, and I need it again
First of I need to prepare the Synology NAS for receiving data.
I activate the rsync server on the Synology
Then I create a user with a given password, it could be called anything, but for easiness I create a rsync user.
Then I assign rights for the given user to the rsync folder which Synolocy calls NetBackup
Looking a the rsyncd.conf file on the Synology reveals the path I should remember for QNAP, SSH in to the QNAP with root, and then 'vi /etc/rsyncd.conf'
Finally the setup on the QNAP
First, activate the service, and select to create a new remote backup job.
Then I create the job by filling in all the details noted from previously, the firewall on the receiving site does a NAT from port 32111 to 873 on the Synology, therefore I have another port here, than the standard 873.
Again, it's handled by the firewall, and not the Synology.
Also, the IP address of the server is of course the WAN address of the firewall that does the NAT'ing on the receiving site.
If you do this locally, it should of course just be port 873 and the LAN address of the receiving NAS.
I can't make it work as a NAS, it has to be a rsync server for some reason, somebody might know why, and give me a hint, if I choose NAS I get an authentication error, which is too bad, as it would allow it to work as SSH.
And that's it, then it's just to choose a schedule, and set it to incremental, and away it goes...

I think if you set it to NAS, it means the other side is also QNAP so they use some other (not compatible) was to connect.fribse wrote:I can't make it work as a NAS, it has to be a rsync server for some reason, somebody might know why, and give me a hint, if I choose NAS I get an authentication error, which is too bad, as it would allow it to work as SSH.

Re: [HOW TO] replicate from QNAP to Synology
Nice HOWTO
Did someone have the rsync HOWTO from synology (ds106) to qnap (509)??
I wanted the other way a rsync connection.
I mean configure the synology to connect to the qnap rsync?
So i have only to open ports to the qnap and not to every synology that i use.
Like i have 3 small compagny's who have a synology.
I have an qnap 509 and want all 3 to connect my qnap to rsync the data.

Re: [HOW TO] replicate from QNAP to Synology
Got it.
make at the synology a netwerk job.
fill in the ip adress from the qnap (internet adress) then the shared drive name at the service name (case sensitive) like Qdownload.
then login name and password.
And it works.

Re: [HOW TO] replicate from QNAP to Synology
I also try to backup from QNAP to SYNOLOGY, but I receive the error on QNAP ("HOST IS DENIED TO LOGIN)
Probably I am skipping this important passage which I do not understand:
"
Looking a the rsyncd.conf file on the Synology reveals the path I should remember for QNAP, SSH in to the QNAP with root, and then 'vi /etc/rsyncd.conf'"
Do I need to change the rsyncd.conf file on the QNAP, and how? from the image is not clear to me. thank you

Re: [HOW TO] replicate from QNAP to Synology
Hello. How did you resolved it? I have the same problem. Need to move data from QNAP to Synology. I enabled RSYNC on synology and tested it from my local computer. It works. Then I tested it from QNAP but without success. Same error.

This error
[/share/melldaShare/RC] # rsync -a ChromeSetup.exe rsync://mellda@192.168.1.100:873/Mellda
@ERROR: host is denied to login
rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(2558) [sender=3.0.7]
The same command works from my computer. Computer and both NAS' are in LAN.
