Error during backup after following instructions

Post by AnthonyPaulO »

Hello everyone,

Back in February I followed the instructions in the PDF to the letter and was able to get the incremental backup solution working. Now (many months later) I've checked the logs to see if there are any issues and apparently there's been issues since day one. I had set up a daily, weekly, and monthly snapshot, and at the end of this post is a portion of the log covering the last 5 days in May. The warning and error I get are similar to the following :

Code: Select all

[28/May/2011:06:00:43] /opt/bin/rsnapshot daily: ERROR: Warning! /opt/bin/rm failed.
[28/May/2011:06:00:43] /opt/bin/rsnapshot daily: ERROR: Error! rm_rf("/share/eSATADisk2/rsnapshot/daily.6/")
I searched the thread to see if anyone else has experienced this on their QNAPs but I couldn't find anything, which leads me to believe that perhaps it's something unique to me, but I followed the detailed instructions to the letter so I'm puzzled. Looking up the error reveals the following link stating that this type of error may occur on an encfs drive :

http://www.backupcentral.com/phpBB2/two ... age-89974/

In attempting to resolve this I tried to verify that my QNAP is indeed encrypted using encfs but no luck, hence my post. Does anyone know if encfs is indeed the problem? If so, what can I do to resolve this issue? If not, what could be preventing the rm from working?

Many thanks in advance,

Anthony

Instead of / at the beginning I would suggest you add a / at the end for all exclude patterns that are directories, e.g. --exclude='.AppleDouble/'.

still not working, the only way around is specifying the entire path (which is not what I was looking for).

As a follow up on the other issues (rm not working) it turned out to be related on HFS+ file system as a rsync target. While looking at this I also discovered that sym link were not working as well. I replaced my usb drive and used EXT3 and both things are now working well.

Hello,

I am trying to change the ssh port to 222 but i think i have done something wrong in the settings, now i am getting several error messages:

When i try to enable the key-based authentication i get:

Code: Select all

[~/.ssh] # scp ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub admin@??:~/.ssh/authorized_keys
admin@??'s password:
/root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub: No such file or directory
when i run Rsnapshot i get the following error message:

Code: Select all

[~/.ssh] # rsnapshot hourly
echo 28513 > /opt/var/run/rsnapshot.pid
/opt/bin/rm -rf /share/HDB_DATA/Backup/hourly.1/

mkdir -m 0755 -p /share/HDB_DATA/Backup/hourly.0/

Try the solution I suggested in a previous message. You can include "Port 222" in the rsnapshot_config file to change the port. I guess your main "issue" is the /share/homes/admin home directory (instead of /root).

Micke,

I followed your tut tut and i changed the argument in rsnapshot.conf to another port, it seems to work. I indeed did an update last week of the Qnap firmware, i think this might be causing the problem.

The RSA application could not find the file and after creating this folder i was kept asking form my password. After i used your script is was not prompted to enter my password and it all seems fine.

Thnx for the help.

Waiting for the backup to be finished

BACKUP finished:
the only warning i get is

Code: Select all

/opt/bin/rsync -av --delete --numeric-ids --relative --delete-excluded \
    --bwlimit=1024 --rsh="/opt/bin/ssh -p 222 -o BatchMode=yes -F \
    /etc/config/ssh/rsnapshot_config" \
    --link-dest=/share/HDB_DATA/Backup/hourly.1/bdjd.nl/ \
    admin@bdjd.nl:/share/MD0_DATA/debbie \
    /share/HDB_DATA/Backup/hourly.0/bdjd.nl/
Could not create directory '/share/homes/admin/.ssh'.
receiving incremental file list
Is this a problem it looks as if it works just fine....

Hello again,

Everything works right for me now i only have an issue with bwlimit, these args are put into the rsnapshot.conf:

Code: Select all

[06/Jul/2011:12:00:10] /opt/bin/rsync -av --delete --numeric-ids --relative --delete-excluded --bwlimit=1024 --rsh="/opt/bin/ssh -p 222 -o BatchMode=yes -F /etc/config/ssh/rsnapshot_config" --link-dest=/share/HDB_DATA/Backup/hourly.1/??/ admin@??:/share/MD0_DATA/daszo /share/HDB_DATA/Backup/hourly.0/??/
But my bandwith profile does not seem to work, when backup is running my upload is dropped to 0 (i have 3Mb maximum), it seeems the bwlimit is not working, how can i solve this problem?

Hope someone can help me.

When i try to run it from the command line and it has to backup a file bigger than 1 gig i get a connection loss and the backup will fail, i just want to test if everything is working fine but i keep getting a connection loss and i have to restart all over again and copying files from another backup into hourly_0.

Hope someone can help.

Anyone? Not a soul out there that can help?
I had a similar problem with an installation of RSnapshot on a windows server running Cygwin. I eventually tracked the problem to the existence of a weirdly named file that rm couldn't delete. I don't recall the name of the file but it came from the resource fork on a Mac.

Hi,

I'm pretty new to rsnapshot.

As far as I've seen there is a way to specify an rsync host (rsyncd) as backup source. Everybody talks about using ssh with rsnapshot. ssh with rsnapshot uses between 78% and 99% CPU on my NAS what might be the reason for rsnapshot being so incredibly slow.
Is there any reason why I should not use the built-in rsyncd on the source and use rsnapshot on the destination to access it? Does this work?

Thanks!

Awesome guide, just wanna say thank you, great work! Easy going on TS-210.
I'm a "backup-freak" and rnsapshot is my favorite for backup outside the serverrooms (where i need a more or less managable solution), made my day.
Keep it up!

Hello,

I've been using rsnapshot for a while now. It is working perfectly.
I've only used it locally on one NAS.

Know I want to backup to a remote nas.
I have it working with one minor glitch.
I have to type in the admin password after invoking rsnapshot daily.

This is no option. Since I want my daily backup done without me being there to type in the password.
How can I accomplish this?

Line to make backup: " backup admin@145.117.116.32:/share/MD0_DATA/Backups/ localhost/ "

Don't mind the names of folders. It's all for testing. I know the backup will end up in the specified snapshot root.

Any help is appreciated.

Kind regards,
Chris
