NAS-to-NAS Sync

Post by nssimpson »

Hi All

I currently work from home but will be moving into offices. At home we have 200mb down/12mb up. The office will have 350mb down/7mb up. We have a TS-212P at home.

I would like to buy another TS-212P to locate at the new office and have them sync. We're only using small files (spreadsheets, etc) so I don't think the internet speeds will be an issue.

My question is if someone has a spreadsheet open in the office and I try to open it at home will the NAS devices communicate and tell the other one that the file is open?

Cheers

office documents handle the file locking themselves, so as long as the replication is in real time it should be no crazy problem.

Will the TS-231P sync okay with a TS-212P?

it should .. speeds will be a bit low due to the small arm processors

The TS-231P has a much more powerful processor. If I put this in the main office hopefully it'll be better at pushing changes to the TS-212P.

Can anyone see any issues with this setup?

Response from QNAP was very helpful. It read:

Ques: can you tell me why there is no real-time option on two-way sync?

Ans: This is design limitation hence we don't have real-time option for 2-way sync.

One-way Sync: Only local -> remote supports real-time & schedule sync but remote -> local sync does support only schedule.

If you would like, we can add it as "feature request" in our internal bug tracker but it will take a long time to analyze & consider the feature. Time frame is unknown. Please confirm on it.

I've now decided to set up a VPN instead and do one-way sync so I have an offsite backup.

Seems to be by far the best option.
