Looking for a solution for daily incremental backup.

Hello guys,

I'm newbie with QNAP, so it might be a stupid question.

I am looking for a software/utility to install on workstations (Windows) which use incremental backup on QNAP NAS ( TS-EC1280U ).
I want a daily file backup, to keep at least 7 versions of the files, but the backup must be incremental, to save storage space and time.
Now, I''m using NetBack replicator, but not performs incremental backup and can't set the maximum number of versions.

I also tried to use AOMEI Backupper, it does incremental backup, but supports versioning only on PRO version.

So if there is some app on QNAP which supports incremental backup & versioning, with windows client, I think this is the best option. I also worked before with another NAS, and there was some apps like this.

Or can someone tell me a free solution to do this kind of backup?:)

What type of data are you wanting to backup this much? why not keep the data on the NAS and then do backups of that data using Hybrid Backup Sync (with versioning) to you external backup.

Please dont say your NAS(unknown - brand, model, firmware) is your backup solution....it requires to be backed up to...

I want to backup important Files.
And yes, I want to use the NAS ( QNAP TS-EC1280U, Firmware: 4.3.3.0238 Build 20170703 ) as a solution for this files.
I have configured two volumes ( one with Raid 10 for ISCSI and Raid1 for backup).

I'm using raid10 for iscsi & virtualization.

I don't really know why you are asking me this question.. Do you have a better option?

RAID10 has no significant befits over RAID6 ... and has less redundancy

Even the PRO users with 10GbE and 4K NLVE rigs stopped using RAID10 .. so just as a hint.


Regarding the software, the NAS would be a storage target for that software of your choice, but besides that it would be off topic to this very forum.

Check the usual offerings like crashplan, veeam, etc (we don't know your exact environment and budget)

To my knowledge, the AOMEI Backupper Standard is able to do incremental backup. As for the "keep 7 versions" you talked about, it is true - only Pro and more advanced version support "Backup Scheme".

Qsync is cloud, and I wanted some kind of backup/replicator software. It's good at versioning, but I'll use too more storage to use Aomei & Qsync.

If I understand the suggested solution correctly, the NAS is providing storage space through a network share and the backup is carried out by an application running on the Windows client. Therefore the Windows client or the application (e.g., Veeam) have access to the network share. If ransomware infected this Windows client, it could possibly access the network share, too, and encrypt all data on it. Therefore I agree with "Toxic17" who said that a NAS needs to be backup up itself.

In my opinion, a backup scheme is incomplete if it does not protect from ransomware attacks.

Nothing worth while or decent comes for Free. All these free software are limited to basic home user not business. I have found that only business software will offer what is needed such as versioning, incremental and full backups, also most free versions will not recognise USB or network shares whereas business versions will and do.

Changing the goal posts

Backup can be done to mitigate ransomeware - but that was not the question

Can you provide a better solution?
