Recovered RAID1 drives from dead TS453 min: Cannot mount

Post by sgordon777 »

Hello,

My TS453-mini appears to have suffered a hardware failure and will not POST.. I had two WD REDs in RAID1 that I've pulled out and am trying to recover on another Linux comouter, but I'm only able to mount partitions /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda4 (see list below). These partitions unfortunately dont contain my data.

Ive tried this with both drives and get same results.

---Error from attempted mount of /dev/sda2 (also sda3 and sda5):
$ sudo mount /dev/sda2 -r -t ext4 disk/2
mount: /home/steve/disk/2: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2, missing codepage or helper program, or other error

1. Why no backups?

2. search for the LPC death, a 100 Ohm resistor probably brings your NAS back

3. Recovery of these internal drives is not easy (LVM on top of mdadm) (hence the need for external backups)

Firstly, Thanks for the HW fix suggestion, I will try this.

>> Why no backups

Well I guess in my stupidity I thought having two drives in a RAID1 array WAS a backup! I hope there's a damn good reason for these extra protocols.

A RAID is never a backup .. (you just discovered why and in addition, if you delete a file or a malware does so, that RAID is also no help)

LVM is to enable Storage Pools and Snapshots

I always thought a prime motive to use RAID1 was that if one drive had a total failure, the data would be safe and easily recoverable from the surviving drive... I'll get busy doing the resistor fix, so hopefully that will take care of it.

That is drive failure tolerance but (as said) not a backup

Drive failure tolerance does nothing for:

- NAS failure
- Accidental or malicious file deletion

Ok, did the resistor mod and it gets much farther now, LED pattern is green, green, blinking orange, blue and I think I hear HDD seeking, but still no display and my NAS isn't coming online.

Did you do anything with the drives yet (the drives hold the OS) .. see if the NAS starts into setup without the drives inserted

Nope, didnt do anything with the drives, except to try and mount them under another PC as read-only

Sorry to answer your other question: NO the NAS does nothing without drives inserted... Does not beep, no video out the HDMI, but blinking orange light

forget HDMI , check for DHCP lease or search for it via Qfinder

I just dont think this thing is booting up, I dont hear enought disk activity.

Im now starting to lose hope that Ill ever get this god forsaken POS started again.... What are the prospects of recovering my data? Is there some guideline or even a place to start? If I bough another system from QNAP (the though of this makes me want to vomit), would I be able to plug my drives into it and go?

without disks the device will only do DHCP..it has only the default bootstrap loader....

if nothing works...you can migrate your disks according to this
