Better Control Over Background Tasks In File Station

Post by Sprocket »

Running more than one copy/move operation at a time results in them being processed in parallel which is very inflexible. I would like to see the tasks worked on sequentially and listed with an option to pause/cancel/promote or demote any one as desired. I see this has been requested in the past but not found its way into the current release.

Please give this some attention soon. Thanks.
My system: PC running Win 10 x64 / i7 processor with 12 Gb RAM/ Gigabit wired LAN / ZTE F660 fibre modem-router in bridge mode / Asus DSL-N55U_C1 Router / QNAP TS651. Drives arranged as Vol 1=2 x 4Tb WD Red mirrored RAID 1; Vol 2 = 1 x 6Tb WD Red Single; Vol 3= 1 x 2Tb Seagate Single; Vol 4 2 x 4Tb HGST RAID 1;

make sure you also create a ticket here to forward the request
https://helpdesk.qnap.com/

though i find it easier making support ticket from qts since it auto fills some what.

but isn't parallel processing better ? since it speeds up processing versus a sequential method ?

at least in web design i find that the scripts worked better when i could parallize when possible.

i can imagine though if your transferring many items in paralel in the background tasks gui, it could easily be a long list. so maybe a scrolled window to help browse the items running in parallel (to keep the scrolled list short but scrollable) ? i hadn't tested moving that many items before to know how exactly it will look. maybe you could screenshot and post to share here and in the support ticket as reference :)

I would say that if you are copying say 10 large files and you don`t use sequential copying your hard drive head would be moving so much you would be getting nowhere.

I`m a plus one on the task queue idea !!!!!!

You are already providing the answer to your question: "at least in web design" = whether parallel or sequential is better depends on your use case and hardware.

Many small files and fast disks (even SSDs in full or for caching) => parallel is usually better.
Large files and slow disk (rust and maybe even SMR) => sequential is better.

There should be an option for admins or users to decide.
"option", because there is no way for QNAP to know use case and hardware in advance, so they cannot make a good guess.
"should be", because the difference is substantial if you are doing it wrong.

In fact: I found this thread because I was looking for a way to queue copy jobs.
I use my NAS as a video box. Accordingly I have large files and cheap disks = SMR.
Starting multiple jobs that are not queued but run in parallel is, ahem, not a great experience.

p. s.: For this very reason I use a file manager that can handle jobs in queues to get data onto the NAS (Path Finder vs. macOS default Finder). But of course copying data with File Station is sometimes preferable. And then a queue-feature would be greatly appreciated.

Me too,

I have ftp/sftp applications which are great for transferring to and from the NAS, but use File Manager with Hybrid mount to copy between NAS. The ability to queue, pause and resume should surely be available in 2020!

Cancelling a job and then setting it up again generally makes a mess of your files even if you select skip existing files.
