The Need for speed

Post by radial14 »

I am looking for a small NAS with 10Gbe, 2-4 M.2 slots and 4-8 2.5in SSD disks.
Prefer an i7 or a Xeon 1538D/1518D as the CPU, not an anaemic Celeron or worse
Qnap has all the components, but often in boxes with large numbers of 3.5in HDD.

This is to complement Mikrotik CR317 10Gbe switch and Supermicro E300-8D as workstation.

2c worth. Here's hoping.

Hi Radial14.

Fist off, all of the QNAP 3.5" HDD's trays also support 2.5" HDDs. How are you looking to use the NAS? As a storage only NAS, running VM's/Docker/etc?? That will have quite a bit of impact on how much CPU/Memory you really need.

A good baseline model would be something like the new TVS-x73X. It is basically the same as the TVS-473 (4-8 drives + (2) m.2) , but with 10GbE standard out of the box. Based on SPAN.com, it looks like should be shipping in a week or so.

Then you go into bigger models such as the x82 family or new x77 Ryzen family (should be shipping soon), not all of them will have 10GbE out of the box, but there are easy options to add it.

Then at the top end you get into models such as the TS-1685 which has a ton of drive space capability.

MikroTik CRS317 correct? Don't forget this is a pure SFP+ switch, the single RJ45 Port is Gigabit only. Note: The desktop TVS-x73X come with single port 10GBASE-T (LAN-10G1TB) and GPU with HDMI, the rack mounted (if this is an option) the TS-x73X comes with a dual SFP+ 10 GbE SFP+ card preinstalled but no GPU/HDMI.

Yes, it is SFP+, but uTik also make a sharply priced SFP+ to UTP module. Again
thanks for the thoughts.

The TS-x77 family was officially released today, so you should start seeing them in the reseller channel soon.
