ability to shrink virtual HDDs in Virtualization Station

Post by ssybesma » Thu Aug 08, 2019 9:30 am

In the meantime until you implement it, here's the complete process I created to do it and it's the most 'direct' way you can which doesn't involve conversion from one VM file format to another:

viewtopic.php?f=199&t=116452&p=722937#p722937

It basically involves two parts:

1) using partition editor, shrink the allocated space and condense all allocated space to the beginning/front of the virtual HDD

2) using a Qemu for Windows utility called qemu-img (has to be newer version implementing the --shrink sub-command), shrink the virtual HDD using the IMG file as an input and specifying the smaller virtual HDD's size

After you're done, you delete the old VM's folder and create the new VM with the modified IMG file. It will show up properly in VS as the new virtual HDD size you selected.

best to request a feature to QNAP directly as Tech Support do not frequent these forums.

oh....I take it you have already discussed with QNAP about doing this and they have agreed?

I did discuss it with them but they have not agreed.
But, I don't think it would be a huge leap for them because there's basically two main things going on that they would have to automate in the background and put a nice front end GUI on it.
I'm not a programmer, but sometimes I get determined and figure out how to do something that I could not find anyone else did first.
