[Wanted] Share / Folder Encryption
Would be nice if apart from encrypting an entire volume I could also encrypt only parts of the data for instance a share or directories containing personal data while multimedia data remains unencrypted. Considering the performance degradation for encrypted volumes, with partially encrypted content, I could still benefit from the better performance without neglecting protection of personal data.

Use RAID with external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

I would prefer to allow multple volumes per RAID as one can do with decent Server RAID controllers, and then one can encrypt such a volume. From a security perspective I somehow expect volume encryption to be stronger.

I'd really like to be able to select to encrypt an individual folder.

I've got a TS-219P, which has no encryption at all. The more expensive TS-239 allows volume-basend encryption.
Three friends of mine just decided for the Synology DS-211j (with CryptFS?), just because they could encrypt their personal shares/folders for a reasonable price.
The advantages of folder encryption over volume encryption are:
a) I think, it can be changed whenever you want it.
With volume based encryption, you have to do it once when initializing the drive, and then stick to it. For changing, you would have to backup your data, then re-initialize your drive and then restore your data from an external drive.
b) It doesn't affect the performance of other data outside these folders.

Agreed. Folder encryption method can be expanded or downsized as required. Stuff outside it won't be affected by performance.
Might i also one up and ask for protocol transfer encryption ? that would be sweet
