Support XMP tags in Photo Station

Post by jafux »

I'd want the Photo Station to support tags / keywords stored within the XMP data of images, so that it can perfectly cooperate with common photo management tools like lightroom and picasa.

Currently Photo Station (and also media library) only recognizes keywords and tags saved in the EXIF metadata and overlooks any keywords in IPTC or XMP metadata sections.
The common way of client tool to add keywords / tags is to write them into the Image's XMP data (like Adobe LIghtroom, Picasa, or even Adobe Bridge - even though they store it in a separate XMP file in Bridge)

When supporting XMP tags / keywords from XMP Photo Station could save user which are using client tools to manage their Photos a lot of time:
- no need to re-do all the tagging again within the Photo Station
- the users can do the tagging within their common environment
- simplified usage of smart albums (e.g.: creating People Albums based on the automatically assigned name tags from picasa)
- ... and i guess there are more use cases I'm not even thinking of

So from my point of view the XMP support would be a great WIN for the Photo Station!

I second, third, etc this! One of the main reasons I bought the QNAP TS-651 was to store my large library of photos, organize them and be able to view them on multiple devices - including my AppleTV. There does not appear to be a good solution at this time to accomplish all of those. I was hoping that at least I could use Picasa to tag my photos and then use QNAP Photostation to create albums based on those tags. As the previous posted mentioned, while Picasa stores the tags in the XMP metadata section, Photostation does not recognize them. Additionally, the tagging functionality in Photostation is extremely limited as it is difficult to tag multiple photos easily (due to the interface) and there is no face-recognition technology (as in Picasa).

While I can understand QNAP may not want to invest in face-recognition tech, it seems a simpler solution would be to leverage the common tagging standards so users can easily organize large numbers of files. Guys, the main reason people buy a NAS is to store large amounts of files; so it stands to reason there need to be built-in mechanisms to help people organize those files and then actually make use of them (ex: being able to view a Smart Album based on selected Tags).

I agree. Photo Station metadata is useless (tagging and rating, description) as it is only visible in the Photo Station App ecosystem. QNAP needs to use the standard metadata formats that are universally used. All my photos are already tagged and I will not re-tag them in photo station. Need this update ASAP or I'll need to find a different NAS

I agree with the discussion above. I however don't understand if the reason for not doing this is lack of business case as if this feature would be available along with possible integration with photo management tools such as Picassa, Adobe and ACDSee, much more people would opt for QNAP as a total solution for working and storing of photos on. The system is great but totally missing this feature which would bring order to many issues such as data security, backups etc. Large server side systems is something I would then opt for, having one at home for basic work and second one at another location for backup of the server.
So, please build the business case, get some tech savvy on this and solve it within few weeks and you will grow your fan base.

I too would love to see Photostation be able to read and display the metadata that is already saved to my photos. I have a catalogue with thousands of photos, where captions have already been saved directly to the images under the description field. Keywords, tagging, colours and ratings have also been added. Photostation can't read this information at all, while other programs can. It would be ideal to have the captions show up beneath the image where the filename is now, or even better, to give users the option of which metadata they would like to display on the page, such as caption, filename, keywords, date taken etc.

Separate database with the metadata is vulnerable and inefficient.
I have 1000s of photos I want to keep organized.
What if the database with my metadata in Photostation got corrupt?
That would result in all the tag/description-work down the drain.

If the metadata was stored in the files directly, I would have a separate Qnap NAS-to-NAS backup if something happened to my photos.

I second this. Photo Station should have the ability to read XMP tags from the image files
