TS231+ RAID 1 ... not boot anymore, i lost everything?
Hi,
I was a big enthusiast of the Qnap NAS, but now i gotta a big problem and i fear that i lost everything nevertheless my RAID configuration.
Let's explain what happened:
Two days ago i noticed from the admin web interface that it was unable to open folders... app rans continuosolly the starting animation... so i decided to reboot the system (from the Admin menu on the upper right).
The NAS reboot but after some minutes i hear two long beep and the LED status became red.
I had tried to connect but the web interface seems not recognise anymore the admin user.
I try ssh... connection refused.
Power Off, power ON... HDD detacched and resinserted: no change.
I googled something on the internet (especially on this forum) and founded that i could read the single HDD as Linux filesystem, so i download Linux Reader and with a USB/SATA adapater i was able to mount one HDD on my desktop.
The software says that some partitions has problem and that i should try to repair them... of course i have detached the HDD becasue i fear that i can made worst untile it is not clear that i have nothing to loose...but i am very worried and at the same time surprised to discover that i got two HDD broken at the same time and without any external negative event... having a RAID system didn't protect me?!
Up to now i have opened a Ticket on QNAP customer care... but up to now no response.
Sorry to boter the forum with this long description but please any information, experience or suggestion will be gratefully in this moment.
There is something more i can try, check or whatever before i will try a repair procedure and maybe loose everything?

raid is never a backup..you always need to do external backups (lesson leanred I hope)
does the nas boot into setup without disks?
was the nas setuo with storage pools or static volumes ?

unfortunately yes.
Yes, without disk the NAS starts in setup wizard.
Storage pools (or at least i remember so... don't sure 100%).

you cannot read storage pool disks (LVM) in a simple ext windows reader .. so that falls flat
can you boot into setup without disks and then insert one of the disks into the NAS and see what it does ?

Mhhh ... I haven't tried, can I? I mean the disc will not be erased?
I have log files that I could read from a partition, one of them says:
It is usefull?

Code: Select all
HDD cannot be mounted because the Internal Model does not match.
The firmware versions of the system built-in flash (4.5.3 Build 20210428) and the hard drive (1.0.0 Build 0000) are not consistent. It is recommended to update the firmware again for higher system stability.

Insert the drive(just one of the RAID1 set) if the system starts do a firmware update to bring the DOM and disks back onto the same FW version

You mean Insert the drive after the NAS boot wihout disk? i.e. insert only one disk in setup mode?
Becasue i already tried to boot the NAS with only one disk (tested both) and nothing changed (double beep and Red Led).

Boot without a disk into setup
Insert a disk into the QNAP (of the ones that were in the NAS previously)
See what happens

Nope, made what you have suggested for both the HDD, same result:
Recovery procedure starts, after some minutes double beep and red led.
The strange thing is that the HDD during the procedure has a very low activity.
Meanwhile i have saved the image of the main partition of one HDD with Linux Reader, hope that will be usefull.

can you upgrade the NS firmware while the NAS has no disk in it ? (via Qfinder)
Try that and then start the NAS again with the disks in it

Re: TS231+ RAID 1 ... not boot anymore, i lost everything?
done...
doesn't change nothing, HDD flips until the progress bar reach more or less 18/20% then double beep and red led.
The only thing is that now i can access the system with ssh... it seems that the HDD fs is not mounted at all.
Possible that i got two broken HDD at same time without particulary events happened?

it is possible that both HDD broke, maybe wait for the ticket and see if they can check the system via SSH (by teamviewer)
