Single disk setup?

Post by carebear »

Hi,

I'm getting a TS-873A. I wanted to use it solely in single disk mode (as I had done with another QNAP years ago), without raid. However, I've read that if the first disk fails, all of the other disks' data is gone as well. Is the data completely gone or can the data still be read by a pc with the required driver? What if I started with 2 disks run in raid 1, and all following disks as single disks? Would that protect me against the failure of the first drive and the loss of all data?

For QuTS you should put the system on the internal NVMe anyways (RAID1 here)

Taking the disks out and reading them in another system was never really an option anyways

with CAT1 units and plain ext it was rather easy
with CAT2 and LVM layer it's pretty complicated
no idea how it will be with ZFS in QuTS

With single disks you need a solid backup strategy (or unimportant data)
