Performance: Single Static HD vs Static RAID1

Post by andrew.0101 »

I've been running a 10TB single static disk for about a week.
While copying data from various external drives I've been impressed with write speeds on the static disk.
From memory it was floating around 120 - 150 MB/s (I think)

I've just installed another 10TB hd (exactly the same as the first) and migrated it to RAID1.
I was not expecting a performance drop, however I'm copying more files from one of the same external drives and it's sitting around 60 MB/s :(

Should I expect a noticeable drop in write performance migrating from a single hd static volume to a dual hd RAID1 static volume?

What is the drive model ?

Maybe that drive is defective and pulls down the write speed ? Write speed should be similar otherwise

Glad to hear performance shouldn't decrease with RAID1.
They're both 10TB Toshiba N300's

I'll try copying something else from another source hd soon, and also copy from the same source to another hd in the unit.
I could have sworn that all my copying with various source/destination combinations prior to migrating to RAID1 was north of 100MS/s

Now that they're in a RAID configuration I assume I can't test the speed on the original drive and compare it to the more recent addition?

Could simultaneously writing to 2 hd's be a drain on resources?
When I upgrade from 4GB to 8GB of RAM could that improve write speeds for large data copies like this?
Should I perhaps have rebooted the NAS after the raid migration?

I've been using Hybrid Back & Sync to copy data from external drives onto the nas.

Unfortunately I've deleted the previous sync jobs, I seem to recall the job report showing an average transfer speed for the job.

What are the chances those reports are still stored somewhere, like the Log Center?

Oops, I'm still getting the hang of this.

RAID1 can run with 1 hd, so I could pull 1 hd run a test, then do the same on the other.

What's the safest way to temporarily remove a hd from RAID1.
Shutdown and just pull the drive from the bay, then boot up?

it will resync anyways..so the method of pull is not relevant

Run this command at a terminal session (PuTTY) to see what the performance of your disks are.

qcli_storage -T force=1

Post the results.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Sorry, I must have totally lost track of the various read performances of the different source drives I'm pulling data from.
The RAID volume write performance seems just fine now.

I ran that command, but the output doesn't make much sense to me
