TS-451-4G Failed Drive Replacement

Post by TheInjunear »

I will be replacing a failed HDD in a TS-451-4G with a new HDD of the same brand and size. The QNAP failed drive installation instructions say "Prepare The Drive". I won't need to hot swap but my question is; Will the new HDD require prior formatting or will the NAS Raid hardware/software take care of it and rebuild on the fly?

I read in the forum that a failed drive should be swapped hot but it wasn't very clear why. Anyone have any thoughts/advice?

What do you mean "you won't need to hotswap"? .. Hotswapping is the way to go, pull the drive and replace it (while the NAS is running!) .. formatting does not matter because everything on it will be gone

Got it, Thanks Dolbyman! The other installed drives have been spinning for almost 6 years. Once the failed drive is replaced and the array rebuilt, I'm going to move onto replacing the other three
