Add 18TB disk to existing RAID5 or migrate from RAID0 to RAID5?

Post by tomiisek »

I have 4 empty 18TB disks and I know that I will have one more 18TB disk in couple of months.

I need to copy data to these 4 empty disks in new NAS from another NAS as soon as possible.

What is easier?

Start using new NAS with RAID5 now and later add another 18TB disk to already existing RAID5?

Or use couple of months new NAS with 4 disks in RAID0 and than add another 18TB disk for migration from RAID0 to RAID5?

(While using 4 disks in RAID0 there will be complete data backup in another NAS using RAID5.)

Is it easy to migrate from RAID0 to RAID5? Or is it much easier to add 18TB disk to already existing RAID5?

You cannot migrate RAID0 to anything ...or expand it..it's a dead end

RAID5 on QTS can be expanded..On QuTS adding disks is also not supported on any arrangement

So the only way is to use RAID5 from scratch?

The NAS is TS-873A.

Only migration path is

Single > RAID1 > RAID5 >RAID6

You don't have to migrate from RAID5 toRAID6 to add more drives though (just an option for dual parity)
