How can I swap single volume disks on TS-221

Post by drooplewx »

Hi there,
I have a TS-221 without RAID, two single volume 6TB disks each.

I'm planning to upgrade to exos 8TB disk, I'm just wondering that can I do a hot-swap without shutdown the machine?

I almost ruined my unit.
I tried to clone the 6TB disk to the new 8TB disk, only can do the same size clone, and let the 2TB empty area. Drive me crazy.

Do any suggestions on steps regard how to upgrade single volume disks?

I shut down the machine, swap the 2nd disk, boot, the status LED kept flashing green and red for almost 8 hours now, does that mean that the new disk is faulty?

Cheers,

An old CAT1 unit will have a system failure if you pull the (system) drive ..but worst case..you have to setup the system from scratch...you will have solid backups anyways with single disks..right?

The system drive is the drive 1?
I'm planning to hot-swap drive 2?

If it's dangerous, then I think I will shut down the machine and swap the disk.

Could you please tell me the steps of upgrading single volume disks?

Actually, I almost ruined my unit.

the danger does not come from hot or coldswap..but by the missing system folders

if it is the secondary drive it ahould be better..remove the volume (so the system does not complain) and swap the disks

yeah cloning will not work .. one of the downsides of running single disks

qfind can find the machine, but is unable to log in.
Open the login webpage in the browser (IE, FF, Chrome) only a cgi file pop up, unable to log in either.

if the cgi file pops up then the machine probably reset itself

never seen that message...

you might have to start from scratch (pull both drives, format them, insert and treat the system as new)

As a last resort, I started from the scratch.
