TVS-672XT RAID5 or RAID50

Post by onesmallstep1966 »

I have ordered another two Seagate IronWolf 10TB HDD’s to max out all six bays in my TVS-662XT and need to ask what RAID will offer the highest sequential write/read performance, 5 or 50?

My LAN is 10GbE and the TVS-672XT has 16GB RAM and running QUTS Hero with the primary system volume on 2 x 1TB Samsung EVO Pro’s in the internal NVME slots, configured as RAID 1.

I am happy with the redundancy offered by RAID 5 but if RAID 50 offers better sequential write/read performance I will accept the loss of capacity and go with it.

Any help or advice much appreciated.
QNAP TVS-672XT Upgraded to 16GB RAM connected via Thunderbolt 3 to Late 2018 MacBook Pro
M.2 Bays = 2 x Samsung 1TB EVO 970 NVMe (RAID 0 for Super-Fast TB3 FCPX editing volume)
Bays 1-6 = 3 x Samsung 1TB EVO 960 SATA and 3 x Seagate 10TB IronWolf (RAID 5 + Qtier)

QNAP TR-004 - Backup device including RTRR for RAID 0 volume
JBOD = 1 x Seagate 10TB IronWolf 1 x Seagate 6TB IronWolf

RAID 5
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!
