"Ghost" static volume appeared, now Storage Pool and Volume are missing!

Post by _Mao®_ »

I just ran the /etc/init.d/init_lvm.sh command and now have NO volumes showing...

No idea what I should do. Don't want to risk re-booting...do I pull the drives, reboot and re-insert the drives?

Update:

TS-451+
Firmware 5.0.0.1891
RAID 5
WD Red 3Tb WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 x2
Seagate 3Tb ST3000DM001-1CH166 x2

- Shut down the NAS, removed the drives and rebooted, came to the Initialization screen.
- Shut down the NAS again, re-inserted the drives in hope of it seeing the drives as being migrated. Unit rebooted normally into my configuration. Volumes are still missing.

Full story:
- For some strange reason this NAS seemed to be treating the configuration as though it was using an SSD. Notifications were showing up such as "Failed to upgrade SSD cache", amongst other flags that I don't recall offhand.
- Even though there was more than 3Tb of free space, I was receiving this error:

"Error 2021-12-21 18:48:27 System 127.0.0.1 Storage & Snapshots Snapshot [Storage & Snapshots] Failed to recycle snapshots. Storage pool: 1. The pool has less than 32GB of free space. Check the status of the storage pool, and consider deleting snapshots to clear space."

- I expanded the guaranteed snapshot space as a result:

Information 2021-12-21 22:16:45 System 127.0.0.1 Storage & Snapshots Storage Pool [Storage & Snapshots] Enabled guaranteed snapshot space for pool 1. Value: 512GB.

- I then shrank the volume:

Information 2021-12-21 22:28:03 System 127.0.0.1 Storage & Snapshots Volume [Storage & Snapshots] Finished shrinking volume "DataVol1". Storage pool: 1, Old capacity: 6.33 TB, New capacity: 6.25 TB.

- Some time later, I believe I received a "Check Disk" notification on login to check DataVol1 - when I opened Storage and Snapshots, there were 2 instances of "DataVol1", the first one was operational, the second was unmounted. Checks of the second instance of course failed. Everything seemed to be functioning otherwise, so I left everything alone in the meantime until I could set aside however many hours it would take to get Qnap support to help.

- Fast forward to yesterday - while transferring files to the NAS from my PC, I couldn't reach speeds above 1.5Mbps - as a last resort, I removed the second instance of "DataVol1". After a reboot, the first instance of "DataVol1" was now telling me that it was locked and encrypted. I've never once set up my Qnaps with volume encryption. Entering a password to unlock the volume was not an option, anywhere in Control Panel. I finally resorted to using SSH to run the above command, and after a reboot, my volumes are now completely missing.

Wish I could change the topic so it better reflects the actual problem...while my problem was relevant to the original topic, it wasn't specifically the core issue.

I’ve unlocked the OP so you can change the topic title. Existing posts won’t be updated with the changed title, but new posts will use it. :)

Seeing in the related post as well, the array is named "md1" and not "md2" - is that signifcant?

I can now say Qnap support's no use. Set up a scheduled time for them to remote in and take a look, wasted 2 hours - 1 setting up TeamViewer and access, another waiting for them to log in during the specified time - they pulled a no-show, and no responses on the ticket.
