SMART failure in RAID-5

Post by Morindin »

Hello,

I have a QNAP TS-453A and I have an issue which is making me dubious.

I have 4 x 4TB HDD from WD Red that composes my RAID-5.

A few weeks ago I got a SMART warning on my drive #2, the warning was SMART 197 Current_Pending_Sector set to 1.

After reading online, I understood and decided to replace the drive to a new one, same brand and size.

At the exact moment I replaced drive #2 for a new one, the warning SMART 197 Current_Pending_Sector set to 1 appeared on my drive #1. ( no I did not change the wrong drive, I checked  )

That seems to be too much of a coincidence for this to append, hence why I'm doubting if I understood the error properly and maybe replaced the drive for nothing.

Can anyone help me shed light on the subject?

Kind regards,

Patrick

What firmware version are you running? There are a number of posts where it seems that SMART reporting is erroneous in some of the 5.0.0 builds.

Firmeware is 5.0.0.1891.

It would make much more sense then the "coincidence" I thought I was experiencing.

If that is the case, then I will have a spare drive for future failure it seems.

Thanks alot for the response! I'll keep a eye for a fix then instead of buying a new drive again!!

You may also want to consider rolling back to the more stable 4.5.4 firmware stream as it may be a while before 5.0.0 is truly production ready.
