RAID Synchronization question

Post by cs7404 »

i initialized a RAID5 on a TS453D and background process was synchronizing for a while. after synchronization finished i updated the firmware and restarted the NAS, it started synchronizing the array again.

is that typical behavior for each bootup, or is a new resync needed following a fw update ?

Synchronization should only happen on initial build, rebuild or scrubbing.

A simple reboot or FW update should not cause that, do the logs say anything ?

don't see log entries related to completion of the first resync, assuming a notification is output when a resync is finished. checked QTS this morning and it was not running the rsync task from the previous day, status in Storage & Snapshots showed 'Ready', instead of 'Ready (Synchronizing)'. shortly after i checked, it started the resync again.

i recall waiting for resync to complete before updating the fw this morning. Log entries ....

checked in qts earlier and i had scrubbing enabled and set to weekly. not sure though whether that was the trigger for the resync that started up again.

looks like this second resync will wrap up within the next hour. i’ll monitor qts after it’s finished.

would scrubbing monthly or manually be a better option ? it’s serving a home (not a demanding business environment) the drives aren’t constantly doing I/O operations 24/7.

keeping an eye on the file system so i have a file system check scheduled to run soon.

i am trying to get done everything i can possibly do to ensure its running well, basic functions work as intended and the fs as well as my recently added content are all in good shape — after which point i can resume using it as my data source and setup hbs3 for the first time.

how does this thing auto update its firmware ?

this morning i checked it to see if resync completed and it did — it also upgraded to qts 5 !

i had anything labeled auto in the firmware section unchecked !!

feels like i have no control here. that’s not a place where i want to put my data

if auto update is disabled, no auto update should happen (none of my units auto update)

i unchecked any auto update options yesterday, well before it initiated the fw update.

not sure what’s going on.

can i downgrade back to 4.5.4 the same way as a manual update (upload the fw to the nas) ?
