Going from static volume RAID 1 + 2 free disks to RAID 5

Post by FrankChutsky »

I have TS-451 running 5.0.0.1891
I have a static volume - Raid group 1 with Disk1+Disk2 in RAID1 array - its been like that for years...
I have two new drives that I put in slots 3 and 4 - all 4 drives are on QNAP compatibility list - 4TB each.
Evidently it is not possible to migrate RAID1 array to RAID5 if you are starting with a static volume...

So, I created Storage Pool 2 with Disk3 and Disk 4 - and made it into a thick volume. Background tasks says "RAID Group: Synchronizing RAID Group 2", so, eventually it will be a second RAID1 array?

My thinking is:
  • Move all of my files and apps (and anything else that I'm not thinking of) from DataVol1 to DataVol2.
  • The Remove DataVol1, freeing up Disk1 and Disk 2
  • Somehow enlarge Storage Pool 2 by incorporating newly liberated Disk1 and Disk2
  • Perform the RAID migration from RAID 1 to RAID 5
Does this make sense? If so, how do I perform that first item in the above list - moving everything from existing RAID 1 on static volume to newly created RAID 1 on thick volume?

Thank you
Frank

RAID1 to 5 Migration should easily be possible no matter if static volume or storage pool

The extra disks need to be free of any pool data and then the process mentioned in the manual needs to be followed

hmm...can you point me to the instructions you are referring to? I could not do it following the GUI...I can delete the thick volume and storage pool and try again....thanks!

Thanks for that! So, the very first step is verify that
the storage pool you want to expand contains at least one RAID group of type: RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 50 or RAID 60
The problem is that the static volume that my existing RAAID1 lives on does not belong to a storage pool. I'm not sure why that is, but the option to expand was greyed out.. hence, my proposed set of steps... Am I missing somethnig here?
