NAS is in Read/Delete mode - can't figure out why

Post by giskard »

Please help.
My NAS has over 10TB of disk space, with 3.89TB used and 5.84TB available, but the data volume is in Read/Delete mode. It's a thick volume and there are no snapshots as I deleted the only snapshot.
In storage pool management, capacity is shown as 10.89 TB with 9.97 TB allocated with 936.40 GB unallocated.
How do I allocate that 936.40 GB to the storage pool?
Why is my NAS is Read/Delete mode when I'm using less than half the total capacity of the volume?

we had this a couple of times..the issue is the fully utilized pool and not the volume

so when the pool runs out of space, it locks the volumes

I'm still very confused. IIRC, when I created the storage pool and the data volume (thick volume), I left some space for snapshots which I'm guessing is the unallocated pool space.
I obviously don't get how it all works - if I have a storage pool, am I not allowed to create a thick volume that uses all of the pool's space?
According to the following dialog, there is unallocated space but it's almost a terabyte so how has the pool run out of space?

How do I prevent my NAS from getting to the unusable state of Read/Delete?

Of the Pool, not the volume I mean

under overview

(Here is my 853BU as an example)

hmm .. there is free pool space, so that shouldn't be an issue then

Is the RAID itself OK ? (two busted drives on RAID5 for example)

Disks are all showing green, no indication of any issues, though I have seen messages that I need to free up at least 32GB of snapshot space in order to avoid the NAS being in Read/Delete mode.

have you tried a reboot of the NAS?

If that also won;t help, open a ticket with QNAP support

I took another look at the storage pool and could see this message:
read-delete-mode-msg.jpg
I deleted some unneeded files and rebooted - hey presto! The read/delete status is gone!
What I don't get is that I'd deleted all snapshots so the snapshot space should have been at it's max, yet the message was saying that another 32GB needed to be freed up to resume normal operation.
Since rebooting the storage pool status is now:
read-delete-mode-msg-after.jpg
I've decided to shrink the volume to make an extra 1TB available for snapshots (iirc I'd originally sized the volume according to the recommended percentage of space to leave for snapshots), but the volume has been made a thin volume (it was a thick vol) but I'm guessing that's temporary for the purpose of shrinking the volume? Will it revert to a thick volume once the resize is complete?

UPDATE: after completion the volume did indeed revert to a thick volume.

I do have a backup plan, though it's not been executed in a while.

oo.. probly 2late to mention but just a reminder from 2 months ago

make sure u check ur backups at least once a year. u can redo your backup if u haven't done one for a long while, you can also at the same time verify that your backups still works. so you will be ready in an emergency :D

backup frequency is really up to you. some people prefer backups on a weekly, monthly scheduled. myself i mostly do manually on an adhoc basis when there is a need to. so whatever u can live with losing comfortably :)

anyway good to know u have a backup plan, gj
