TS-473 OS very slow

Post by WardComputers »

Firmware QTS 5.0.1.2145
The Operating system of the NAS is very slow.
Accessing files via Windows explorer is just fine.
Trying to setup HBS 3, never opens the NAS folders (Waited 1 hour) for me to select.
Keeps loosing external HDD.
When opening the external storage it may or may not open.
keep getting snapshot error. It thinks 100% of the drive is not available.
"Warning 2022-09-28 12:07:35 --- --- localhost Storage & Snapshots Storage Pool [Storage & Snapshots] Storage pool 1 has reached the space alert threshold of "10%". Remaining free space: 0 Byte. Insufficient space might affect data storage and snapshot services. Free up space or increase the threshold."
The drives (RAID 5) have plenty of room Thick volume 3.3TB of 10.63 used.
Disks all show good.

You set a pool threshold of 10% and created a volume with nearly the pool size.
Even when there is no bit of data written in volume, a thick volume allocates the space from pool!
Set pool threshold to 100% (or some % less).

But this has nothing to do with OS speed.
Is NAS exposed to WAN?
Any unusual processes?

Here is a TS-473A running without any issues, QTS is 5.0.1.2145.

The threshold was 100 and 99% same warning. I changed it today playing around. I am sure it was how I set it up originally.
The NAS is not exposed to WAN, just the LAN. No unusual processes and the RAM and CPU are barely in use.

As far as I remember the default is 80%.
If warning remains when threshold is modified I guess that the update process is slowed down by any background process.
A reboot does not solve this issue?
You can try to reinstall the current firmware.

I just installed a 512gb M.2 SATA into one of the M.2 slots (not one of the PCIe) to use SSD caching. Is there any way to to install the OS and all apps on the drive or drives in those two M.2 SATA slots?

Never use a single drive for cache, even a read cache will kill your cached volumes on failure.

OS is always on all internal drives(spanning RAID1), so no dedicated usage possible

Ok. So I need to get another drive into that other slot ASAP

THANKS

Reboot and firmware reinstall did not help. Great idea though.

a read/delete volume is stuck due to the pool being full, you need to shrink that volume (as you don't have snapshots to delete)

dolbyman, that makes sense, how do I do that without data loss?

Data loss is always an option, that's when your external backups come into play (ALWAYS have external backups)
