Is This A Problem

Post by voyagerxp »

Hi i've been searching on info about my nas that is experiencing fluctuating slow transfer speeds. When copying files to my nas from my computer it says time remaining calculating for a few mins then says replace the destination so i click yes & when it does start the speed fluctuates from 100mb to 0 bytes and back up to high speed. I've done a Sequential Read Test and one of the drives is low on the score compared to the other drive even though the drive is good, could this be a problem.

Nas model TS-453A
NAS Firmware QTS 5.0.1.2145
QVR Pro version 2.2.1.0223.2022/08/11
TP-Link TL-SG1016D Switch
Firmware of camera v2.0.0.158_18071810
network Virgin Media M200 Fibre Broadband

Computer specs below

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz
8.00 GB
Nvidia GTX 850M

Disk drive 1 has an amazingly bad read performance. Also it seems that drive 1 is of another model type?!
And yes, the performace of drive 1 qualifies as "problem". ;)

No wonder why. WD EFAX series is using SMR technology, in a mixed environment with CMR disk a no-go!
In most cases SMR disks are not suitable for use in a NAS!

Slowing down the whole I/O is one of the outcomes when using SMR disks!

I didn't know that, the drive is a WD Red with NASware 3.0 so thought it would be fine. I'm only a novice in the world of nas and hadware.

Thats the big issue when WD introduced SMR in WD red..catastrophic bad press and user experiences, so they invented WD plus for CMR non Pro reds.

Complain to WD and they will swap it to WD plus

Yes, the WD Red Plus (and Pro, but the WD60EFRX are Red Plus) are fine.

It was a scummy move of WD. Ars technica has a few articles if you're interested
