Sorry to revive this thread. I am having this problem again, but now as a security measure the default admin account is disabled. So when i use Putty to restore the backup, I cannot overwrite any files and get permission denied errors. Is there a way to elevate my user (which is normally an admin) to be able to restore my user and group data?
If not, what are my options? Am I forced to reset the QNAP to get a new admin account?
admin user has no root access (lost admin rights)

Re: admin user has no root access (lost admin rights)
there is a soft reset (3 seconds, 1 beep) and a hard reset (10 seconds, 2 beeps)
usually u wouldn't do a hard reset unless u had no choice. whereas a soft reset is less benign but it will help you get back access to your nas if you are somehow locked out (usually because of a misconfiguration or triggering the firewall ip lock outs due to incorrect credentials inserted too many times)
so i would first try a soft reset first.
if u do have to resort to a hard reset

strongly recommended to always have a backup plan though just in case.

Re: admin user has no root access (lost admin rights)
Did you also try to run the backup with "sudo" permissions?
This usually works, at least at my TS-473A, if the alternate admin account fails.
