They typically aren't.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Great thread.

Does anybody know whether the MOSFET issue outlined here affects the TS-453mini?

I have the random "Disk 2 disconnected" error, and have been told by QNAP that if the disk tests ok it is most likely the backplane, and if that's the case I need to look at a new system.

The TS-453Mini does not have a separate backplane (photo attached of the mainboard) but I'm wondering whether the issue with the MOSFETs is the same as those outlined here?

I'm also assuming that the ICs in question are the 8 pin located near each slot, 2 are marked in purple. I haven't taken my board out to see the part number to validate the MOSFET part number, this pic is off the internet but the board is identical to mine.

Thanks

Before you go too far down the rabbit hole, have you tried just disabling the "smart fan" setting, and manually setting it to medium? Based on what I can tell, that resolved my problems.

Here's where I got the idea.

And here's my details on getting mine up and running again...

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=166600#p835498

Good luck! Hope you get the problems worked out.

Hi Robbie.

Yes had seen that thread and have replaced the disk and set the fan speed to medium. So far so good but too early to tell whether it is has fixed the issue, I think I had a month or so between errors last time, but have fingers crossed.

Best case it has sorted the problem and I now have a spare disk.

Hi, I have a ts-EC880pro and I have issues with drive bays 1 thru 4 not being detected and the status lights for that bays are off.

upon booting with LED for the those bays turn on, but after the OS has loaded the led for those bays (1-4) is off.

tried rebooting and over the monthob servation , randomly 1-3 works but not 4 , and sometimes only 2 bays out of the first 4 works but in random position.

Have had the dreaded error occur twice this week on my TVS-1282, I am running RAID 6 - so a very close call with 2 drives disconnecting at the same time.

First both disk 6 and 8 disconnected 4mins after the monthly scrubbing started:

I feared that the system fan being set to automatic was the cause, and system / HDD temperatures rose with with no automatic increase of the speed of the system fan. I recently installed the Noctua CPU cooler in replacement for the Corsair H5 so it may be a cause of increased temperatures in the case

RAID did rebuild successfully for both disks 6 and 8, neither showed SMART errors - so I increased system & CPU fan to 75%, monitored that all HDD's remained ~37 C Degrees and I attempted to backup data to an external disk.

Disk 6 disconnected again and the RAID is now rebuilding again:

Code: Select all

I've opened a ticket with QNAP support, but reading all of the issues here makes me think the backplate is at fault so I guess will have to look into this MOSFET issue unless any other ideas?

As an update of the above..

From my logs the QNAP helpdesk diagnosed a back plane issue

I was offered a paid RMA, and told that "the system defaults to 1230 USD"

So I guess it's time to first try and improve cooling / read more about circuit boards or find someone to help who can help with soldering new resistors or MOSFET chips...

Hi Docwoelle,

Sorry, I know it's been a while but I've come up with the same issue. How has your system been going for the past 18 months after this fix?
Can you please tell me why you opted to go for the SI4925DDY-T1-GE3 rather than new E6P02?
I'm showing my lack of knowledge here as well, what does the T1-GE3 mean at the end of SI4925DDY-T1-GE3? I see plenty of SI4925DDY but not many SI4925DDY-T1-GE3.

TIA!

To follow up on this I pressed QNAP support to detail which logs relate to the backplane issue - they pointed to an error from 2 years ago, which the code related to an external hard drive - needless to say this is nothing to do with current issue.

I have improved cooling in my system and have since managed to backup >20Tb to external hard drives with no issue. I am sure that many issues occurring are due to overheating.

I will personally add a fan to directly blow on the backplane to cool down that section of the box.

To all: be aware that support may diagnose this issue incorrectly and first check out ways to improve your cooling system.

I had a response from QNAP support who officially suggested this MOSFET :

"As a pragmatic solution, there is the possibility of unsoldering the MOSFET component for slots 6 & 8 and replacing the component with a SI4925DDY-GE3."

I presume "GE3" means Generation 3.

Found some sellers on Alixpress, will order a few and maybe attempt a fix if I get another disk error

Hello everybody!
I am from Argentina, I opened a topic due an issue about a disconnected/failed disk and... after a couple of comments with @Dolbyman... he told me to read this thread... :(

[added link to said topic by dolbyman]
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=170222
First to all, my HW:
QNAP TS 431P with 4 disks Seagate Ironwolf 4TB, with FMW 5.1.0.2348 and qfinder pro 7.8.4

I have read most of the pages of this topic, since 2017 until 2023... and most of these are related hw/backplan issue... so, I think that there is no lucky with this.. I can try to open a case with Qnap, but if the issue is in the HW, here in Argentina it's impossible to get parts...

What I have done today? I alredy removed all the data so, I can play with the disks... I unplugged all, started the nas, connected the first one, I performed the system initialize, erased the disk, configured admin/pass... everything OK... then, I added the disk 2, some minutes after the disk 3 and finally, the disk 4... everything was good/green... the 4 disks in GOOD status... great! But... I created the volume with Raid 5, it started... and some minutes after, doing the synchro,,, the raid moved to "degraded" status and that was because the bay/disk 4 changed to "empty"...

Yes, I know that I am just one more guy with same issue...

Someone have tried other option that solve the issue without HW replacement????

Thank you, and I will try continue working/reading options... :-(

PS: as exaplained to Dolbyman, my english is not very good... sorry about that.

Well, last week I opened a case (Q-202303-65283), i generated the error again, i upload the logs requested by qnap and by now, the answer is: "there are IO errors, replace the disk"... 🤦🤦🤦

I explained that I put the disk of bay 1 in the bay 4, and I have similar situation, etc.. so, waiting.

Hello friends, just an update.. Today, the Mexico's support connected to my pc using teamviewer and after some revision the defined the backplane error and this should be replaced (i do not know if some compoment or the backplane), so.. the fix Will cost u$s 170.
Here in Argentina it is all expensive... But the fix is the cheeper option, just that I do not know to perform the fix or.. try the manual activities like the Youtube videos...
Will see.
Thank You.

Similar issue with a TS-453BU-RP. drive bay 3 keeps disconnecting randomly, average once every 3 days. I know is a old unit.
After few tickets and remote checks, the QNAP guys determined is ahrdware problem with the backplane.
Unfortunatelly the part "Qnap Backplane V1.2 for TS-453BU (70-1QY740120)" is not in stock nowhere.
