Disk 2 in RAID1 "degraded" TS-251+
Hello!
I have two 2TB disks in RAID1 and everything works fine until Disk2 is "degraded". The disk itself reports as fine and no damaged blocks etc. So I assume it's the RAID config that is damaged.
I have followed the instructions on the QNAP site, but there's one thing I can't (or don't want to do).
The instructions tell me to replace Disk2 with a "new" disk. I don't want to buy a new disk just to replace an obviously working disk.
There isn't any way to end the RAID1 either and it is not possible to rebuild it with the degraded disk.
Is it possible to make Disk2 "new" by formatting it and reinserting it into the NAS and the rebuild the RAID1?
If so, how do I format it in the existing NAS? Is it just to remove Disk1 and put Disk2 in its place and format it?
Or is it possible to format it in another computer (I have a cable with an USB in the other end)?
Btw, as the TS-251+ will die sooner or later (did the resistor fix) I ordered a new NAS. Can I insert the "degraded" disk in the new NAS and let it clean and format it and then reinsert it back into the TS-251+?

It's OK by the quick test.

I have Remove and Format as options in the dropdown Actions, but don't dare in case smth happens to Disk1

First: the quick test is usually always "good" (if disk has no major issues), run the complete test.
It lasts several hours, but is more accurate (in most cases).
Second: if you did already the resistor fix, prepare to migrate in near future, may be the fix prolongs lifetime a while, but now the error continues.
Further hints: you can remove a degaded disk, connect it to PC, remove all partitions and re-insert it in NAS for a rebuild.
But: (big BUT)! You need to clear the disk list in NAS prior re-inserting. NAS "knows" the serial/WWN of the disk and if its flagged as "faulty" re-inserting will end in "degrade" again.
Unfortunately I cant remember the exact location of the file, as far as I remember its somewhere in /mnt/HDA_root (or a subdirectory).
Dont use the options from pull down menu! Not sure, I did never use it, but my guess it will format the volume (headline is Volume management)!
Regards

Thanks, I'll look into it
Wouldn't it be possible to remove Disk2 from the list and then reinsert it and hope QTS formats it?

Re: Disk 2 in RAID1 "degraded" TS-251+
As far as I found in my recordings it is /mnt/HDA_root/.conf, here is an example when a disk was in warning status (note: this is an examle from an old Cat1 NAS with legacy firmware!):
The last line indicates the faulty disk.
In a Cat2 NAS with HAL firmware it looks like this (currently no disk error):
Regards
Code: Select all
[~] # cat /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.conf
hw_addr = 00:08:9B:A9:FC:F9
QNAP = TRUE
hd_name = /dev/sdg
mirror = 1
serial_no1 = WD-WMC1T0437214

serial_no3 = WD-WMC1T0933464
serial_no4 = WD-WMC1T1097572

serial_no6 = WD-WMC1T0439684
serial_no7 = WD-WMC1T0959068
serial_no8 = WD-WCC1T0387877
hw_error1 = WD-WMC1T0437214

So that's the right configfile anyway. I got disk2 into a LogiLink but it doesn't show up. Must install the software and see if I can get access. What should I format it to?

Re: Disk 2 in RAID1 "degraded" TS-251+
Did you ever replace a disk in this system?
3 s/n in a 2-bay slot is odd.
Found an example with a disk in error status in another forum:
The line "pd_err_wwn_5000039AF8D2DD47 = 0x1" is to delete in that case.
There is currently no such entry in your file, so all disks are ok at present time!?
A backup is available?
Then - if it would be my NAS - I would proceed in that way:
remove the degraded disk
check, if the .conf file is changing (an entry with an error is added)
remove all partitions (USB dock to PC)
re-insert disk
rebuild should start.
Perform all steps ONLY if an actual backup is existing!!!

Re: Disk 2 in RAID1 "degraded" TS-251+
The disk ending with 1B is the disk I have removed now.
I have backed up the data acc to 3-2-1 and also the NAS conf files.
Anyway I have Disk1 working fine, too. so that will not be touched I suppose as it is the foundation to rebuild disk2?

Re: Disk 2 in RAID1 "degraded" TS-251+
Yes, the rebuild starts from the remaining disk(s).
Disk1 will not touched, but because a rebuild is a higher load than in normal operation it happened some times, that the "good" disk failed too due to the higher load.
Thats, why a backup is always mandatory.

Re: Disk 2 in RAID1 "degraded" TS-251+
So, tried with my LogiLink but I don't see the USB drive in Win10. Not possible to format it.
Will figure out smth else. Maybe delete all info about this drive and hope RAID starts to format it
I thought of splashing out on a 2TB SSD for the new NAS.
Is it possible to use a HDD and a SSD in a RAID1 config?
Then I could use Disk1 as the primary and rebuild RAID1 with the new SSD and then swap it to have the SSD as the primary and use the HDD as a slower backup if the SSD goes faulty.
