RAID1 to RAID6 Migration

Post by mrradon »

Well after getting all my extended family on my QNap I started to run out of space. I had originally started with (2) Seagate 12Tb drives in Raid 1.
I back up regularly, so after buying (3) new 12Tb drives I installed and migrated to RAID 5.
TIME to migrate Raid 1 -> Raid 5 was a little over 35 hours.

After that was done I added one more 12Tb disk and migrated to Raid 6.
The initial estimate was 302hr 28min! From reading on the forum I knew this was going to take longer.
Total time to migrate to RAID6 306hr and 39min. I did notice migration dropped when scheduled services kicked in our I had a lot of traffic when people logged in. Otherwise she just chugged away.

So if others are planning on doing this migration - it will take awhile, but it hardly affected performance.

Given RAID 5 with large hard drives is falling out of favor, why doesn't QNAP allow RAID1 -> RAID6 migration, would have saved at least a day.
