QuTS Cache sizing - TS-873A

Post by mikeyscott »

Is there a sizing guide for recommended disk sizing?

I've got 2 x SSD drives for cache, but only 64GB and plan to increase the size of them. I've got a TS-873A with 32GB RAM. Drive config is currently 2 x 1TB NVMe, 2 x 12TB and 2 x 3TB drives, but planning on 6 x 8TB drives in RAID6.

Ordered 4 x 4TB drives to move it to 8 x 4TB drives are a post on reddit from QNAP recommended not bothering with the cache drives. Drives have turned up DOA, so back mulling what to do. Might move to QTS due to the easier drive expansion.

I've just added some SSD cache SSDs to a pair of TS-873As tonight.
SSDs for cache on ZFS really need PLP (Power Loos Prevention) Enterprise Grade NVE SSDs.
The largest size I could find is Kingston 960 GB for $139 each on Amazon.

I have 2x Almost identical TS-873A boxes:
64GB ECC RAM - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MT3SLN6
Dual QXG-10G2TB 10gbe cards,
2x 1TB Samsung Evo Plus in RAID 0 for the System Pool in the M2 slots
QNAP QM2-2P-344A PCI card for the Kingston SSDs
Running QuTS Hero.
Both connected to a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD UPS.
I have 8x 8TB 128MB cache HGST data center drives from the first box (2021)
8x 16TB WD Ultra-store Data Center Drives with 512MB cache in the new one.
Both systems are running RAID 6.

Back to the SSD cache question.
On ZFS, there is no choice with only 2x SSDs. You have to create a combined pool.
However, one advantage is that you can choose the folders you want to use cache on, so this makes a 1TB SSD a pretty decent size.
People say 1% to 2.5%, but ZFS doesn't actually need SSD cache as much as maxing out with ECC RAM.
It will take a few days to fill the cache then I'll see what kind of difference it makes.
