Using multiple Gigabit Ethernet cable to boost read & write performance?

Post by ITEngineer »

Hi Folks,

I have my QNAP TVS-471 with 4x network cable like below:

What's the best way to setup and configure it so that when my laptop/workstation is connected to the switch, I can use full Gigabit Ethernet speed to upload and download the files to my QNAP?

Any steps and procedures would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

A multiple connection between PC and NAS does not multiply the network speed!?
A single connection is sufficient. At all my NAS devices I see (sometimes) the full speed of nearly 120 Mb/s, but this depends to type of access and data. When copying data the average is about 70-80 Mb/s.

Hi @FSC830,

OK, so in this case, if I directly connect my LAN cable from the laptop to the QNAP NAS, it would be faster than going through the wireless, I assume?

Just connect a single cable to the NAS and use a switch, no current wireless system can come close to a single 1GbE connection

Above shown setup also has 4 different subnets (/24?) so it's all over the place

Hi @dolbyman,

WHy do I need to connect to the Switch, if I connect directly using a Cat6e cable to the NAS, do I get higher throughput ?

OK, so if I simplify the connection for Workstation 1 like below:

WOuld it be working faster ?

If you just connect workstation 1 to the switch and run it in the 192.168.1.0/24 network, it would be fine ..(unless workstation 2 is hammering the NAS on that wirless subnet all the time, but compared to a wired connection it should be by far less traffic even then)

You can also just leave it it..that diagram explains it at least better than before
