Hi,
I have a TS-230 with 2 disks in RAID1. 2 days ago the NAS rebooted after a power outage. And now I'm unable to unlock the encrypted volume. It always stops at 63%. Also, the system is unresponsive (cannot use the web interface, cannot launch apps, cannot login again if I logout) as soon as I'm launching the unlocking process. I have a backup in a cloud service, encrypted by the NAS, and made by HBS 3 Hybrid Baclup Sync, but I cannot launch the app to launch the restoration... Any idea on how to unlock my data? Or maybe restore, if unlocking is not possible?
Thanks a lot for the help!

Re: Impossible to unlock volume
i don't know why your encryption doesn't unencrypt.
but if unlocking were possible outside the usual method, that would defeat the purpose of encryption.
are u sure u entered the correct decrypt key to unlock? thats the first thing to check.
If on your nas side it doesn't work, then you need to test on your backup.
have u ever tested the unecrypted before? has it ever worked in decrypting? always test first before using for production. I would first test with a small sample data (due to small file size to make this faster), and once u confirmed it works, then u can use it.
Make sure u save the encryption key password offline and test that it is correct, in case u forget it in future, then u got this saved somewhere so u can refer to.
anyway create a ticket and see if helpdesk has some suggestions for u

u mentioned about power outage. did u check file system yet? in case that was corrupted

I know the correct password (never changed), but QTS always shows an "Entered Invalid Key" notification.
QNAP support tried to fix for one month with Remote Support enabled, but the ticket was closed because "they are unable to unlock without the password, please have data recovery from third party recovery vendor."
No words. Only one note: DON'T USE VOLUME ENCRYPTION ON QNAP.

Re: Impossible to unlock volume
my only experience with QNAP encryption is the share encryption.
https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/faq/arti ... red-folder
i've been using it for 10 years or so, has always successfully unlocked. so thats the only feature i can vouch for that works. and i've been through multiple power outages during that time period.

Re: Impossible to unlock volume
Thanks for the responses!
Yes I'm sure that the password is correct. If password is wrong, unlocking does not go up to 63% + error message is shown. Also, I can access my backup on the cloud service + unencrypt via QENCDecrypter. But what I want to do is to restore the partition directly from the NAS with HBS3. But HBS3 does not launch, as it is probably installed on the partition I cannot unlock... Or even better, unlock the partition without going through the restoration process.
Problem is a bit different from the previous topics you've found, because the system does not tell me that my password is wrong.
Any idea on which logs I should check?
I've also created a ticket but not sure I'll receive much help here...

Re: Impossible to unlock volume
If the disk is suitable to connect to a PC (i.e. one disk from raid1 or a single disk) a decryption can be done outside the NAS.
The encryption is based on LUKS, but I never was involved in this and I never used encryption at my NAS.
And all who have dealt with that recommend strongly to create acopy of the disk prior any attempts to decrypt. So you will have a fallback, if something goes wrong.
About one year ago an error was reported in German forum for a TS-230: after a 3s reset access to encypted volume was possible without entering the encryption password - referring to poster!
May be here you can find some information: https://www.linux-howto.info/mount-qnap ... ed-volume/.

Re: Impossible to unlock volume
Hi Jul_fr,
Did you find a solution to this?
I just went through a complete factory reset of my TS451+ (QTS5.0.1.2248 Build 20221215). Running RAID5 on three disks and the fourth I use for Backup and is a single disk.
The other day we lost power and now the disk is stalling at 91% while unlocking.
Would be great to hear if and how you managed to fix this problem.
