Setting up System and Storage Pools - TVS-h1288x

Post by thamaddoktor »

Good day all! Thank you in advance for all help on this topic.

I have set up so far a TVS-h1288x as a NAS for Plex movie and music serving.

Here is my set up:

- 2 1TB WD Red SSDs -System Pool - RAID 1 - with a public shared folder
- 8 16TB WD Red HDDs - Storage Pool - RAID 6 - no public shared folder yet

Questions:
- I am setting up a Shared Folder on Storage Pool 2, using the Create Shared Folder Wizard tool. I am calling the Folder Name: Main Storage. The Storage Pool 2 has free size of 83.78 TB available. I am doing a Thin Provisioning....
- where I am confuses is the allocate folder quota. it is set at 16.76 TB. I can't make it any larger....why?
- I wanted to create a folder that uses the full space (83.78 TB)...is that not a good idea? Any suggestions on size of folder quota?

Thank-you All!

- Do you have (guaranteed) snapshots 'blocking' pool space ?

I have 5.53TB of free space in my pool (also a 1288X) and I can set the folder quota to the full remaining amount

Dolbyman,

I am an idiot. I never noticed the "set to pool capacity" button next to the allocate folder quota. Once I hit that button it allowed me to create a shared folder utilizing the entire storage space of 83.78 TB.

Appreciate your screen shot and recommendation.

Cheers!

Dolbyman,

One more quick question... I looked in other treads on Plex but didn't see anything on this.

When setting up the Plex App on my system, would you recommend:
- Putting Plex on the System Pool - (2 x 1TB SSDs)
- Putting Plex on the Storage Pool - (8 x 16TB HDDs) -- where I will be placing all of my plex media folders

I read on another forum that Plex app should be placed where you will house your media, but was also thinking that the System Pool set up on SSDs woudl be faster...

Please let me know your thoughts.

Cheers!

Depending on the size of your Plex DB, it could benefit from storage with more IOPS (the SSDs)

Honestly, I have a Plex Server on a 951X with the system on 5 spinning disks, I do not notice any significant difference in responiveness compared to Plex on the 1288x (the 1288X has more transcoding power of course)

Ok. Appreciate the insights. Just wanted to make sure it didn't make a difference of where I placed the Plex Server App.

The Plex App can be migrated to different pools after the fact, so you can test it out

So...moved the Plex App from the SSD System Pool to the HDD Storage Pool. When I did so I got the terrible gray screen "plex not authorized you don't have access to this server"

I've read a few posts in this Forum and other Forums...

Read these...
- viewtopic.php?f=358&t=166612&p=838451&h ... er#p838451
- https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281 ... -i-get-in/

These posts requires alot of things I have never done before. Using a SSH Client? I am a nube....

Can I just factory reset my NAS and start over?

Any suggestions welcome...

Thank you in advance!

SSH access is pretty easy..but a factory reset will not be neccessary..have you tried a NAS reboot first?

I did a reboot I think. Would that be just restarting the NAS?

Or would it be one of the following options:

1. Three second press and hold of the reset button

2. Ten second press and hold of the reset button
This restores the default system settings without deleting the user data.
Software resets executed from the QTS interface (web browser)

3. Restore Factory Defaults & Format All Volumes
This will reset the system settings to its defaults and it will also format all of the volumes currently in the unit.

4. Reset Settings
Comparable to the 10 second button press mentioned in the Hardware resets section earlier. This restores the default system settings without deleting the user data.

5. Reinitialize NAS
All data will be deleted. The disk partitions will be cleared and the NAS will have to be set up again by the QTS Quick Setup after rebooting.

Thanks again for all your help! I am learning everyday!

Cheers

No just a reboot of the NAS.

I could imagine that the Plex DB got stuck and might have either not been spun up correctly or maybe got partially corrupted. A reboot could help. Worth a shot.

Dolbyman,

I want to make sure I understand what a "reboot" is.

How do you properly "reboot" a TVS-h1288x?

Thanks!

Login via GUI and issue a reboot (top right)

Or via the display in the front
